you should really do yourself a favour and buy the smallest car you can (3 cylenders if you must)

you will save on petrol.

i know its a bit late to tell you this now.... but cars DO cost a lot of bloody money, especially when you have none.

and the trouble with old cars, in the end your going to have to replace EVERYTHING...its happening now im afraid.

if public transport is available, id be selling the car on ebay and cut your losses

He had the van way before the car Kitty, it was all he could afford at the time. He bought the Camry finally because it used less fuel, but then it broke down over a year ago and he is just now trying to get it working again. But being forced to move to a higher rent home recently ... well, you get the story.

P.S.  I don't think we have 3 cylinder cars here.

Unless you count the Geo Metro/G10....... hmmm....  that name is similar to a much more modern half-assed idea.

John, keep in mind that you will be taking the load off the wheel bearings with the car on jacks and the weight off of them, so bearing noise would be less noticeable.

Also, be sure to support the lower control arms to keep the axles as straight as you can when running the car on jacks. If you run it with the wheels hanging too far you could damage your CV joints. 

You should run the car on the ground on wheel rollers in a garage to be safe John.  One that has a pit underneath it so you can locate the problem. That is the ONLY safe way.  Maybe a garage in the area would be nice and let you use it? Although I doubt it, there are hardly any kind people left in the world like that.

Ok will keep that in mind, wont do it for long and I wont be the one under it.. lol.. but I dont have access to a lift\pit so basically this is only option.

We do have a stethoscope and jack stands.

To be safe,  jack the car up, remove the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts down onto the rotors to hold them on tightly. Put a cinder block under each of the lower control arms and use jack stands behind both front wheels to support the car. Lastly, chock the rear wheels and set the parking brake. You can run the car without the wheels on it, just keep the rpms down to a minimum and use 1st gear.

The blocks will support the front end and hold the axles straight and with the wheels off you can check the bearings without getting under the car. 

I don't have to tell you not to get under a running car, I'm sure you already know that.

A stethoscope isn't essential.....wouldn't be the first time I'd located which tappet was off....with the use of a screwdriver to the ear....

alot of people scoff about 3 cylender or small motors.. but at the end of the day, the owner of the small car is laughing when they have filled up and payed 20 bucks, and driven off, while every other moron is still filling up their 6 cylinder guzzlers  and its going over 100 dollars.

with todays economy, people have to think more smart, not materialistic.

anyway, back to john, well, just trying to give you a bit of financial advice....to help in your endevours like the rest. wasnt personally attacking .
