Happy Hanukah!

Tonight is the first night of the Hanukah celebration, my favorite celebration. Any holiday that requires me to eat latkes (shredded potatoes fried in oil, served with apple sauce or sour cream) and doughnuts (um, doughnuts) is okay with me. Oh, yes, and we give out chocolate coins. (Yes, Feline, I used the "c" word.)
Hanukah is a celebration of freedom and the right of people to practice their religous beliefs. At least thats the way we interpret it at my house, but I'm a secular humanist, so what do I know.

haha zathrus..i think you got a DIRTY mind...!!!!!Dreidel is a chanukah game.Its like a spinning top with hebrew letters on its sides.Not really sure what the rules are,but its like a game of chance.

I will describe a dreidel, but one DesktopX Object by AlexG is easily worth a thousand of my words. Everybody should check it out.
The story is that the Syrian Greeks invaded Israel long ago. Syrian Greeks representing 1/2 of what was left of the Empire of Alexander the Great.
They desecrated the Temple, declared everyone must worship Zeus, generally made things unpleasant. The Israelites rebelled, lead by a family that adopted the name Macabee, meaning hammer. Somehow the Macabees army beat a larger, better equipped army. A miracle, so they thought.
They entered the Temple to find the oil for the Eternal Lamp was depleted. Somehow a one-day supply lasted 8 days. Another miracle.
The dreidel is a toy, a top, that celebrates these miracles. It has four Hebrew letters that are used to play a game. You spin it and depending on what letter faces up, either add to the central pot (sometimes money, sometimes treats for the kids) or take from the pot. The cool thing is that the four letters also signify the Hebrew words meaning: "A great miracle happened there." In Israel, it is different. "A great miracle happened HERE."
The Hanukah story is part of the common heritage of Jews, Christians and Moslems. The values are universal. People should have the right to worship as they please.

Thanks Koop, for explaining that. Coming from basically an atheistic(?) family I never really learned about things like that. For those that do celebrate the religous aspects of these holidays, I wish you a happy Hanukah too.
