Yes, you were 'buying' and, by the terms of that purchase you not only had 12 months in which to download and install, you also had access to any and all updates within that same period.
Stardock cannot be held responsible for your subsequent 'loss' of that which you purchased when you changed computers/whatever.
Your only/best option is to renew the subscription AND make a specific point of downloading the product/s to be stored locally to avoid future repetition.
As an example, I have very early downloads of Stardock's products...some 15 years old, even though I have no intention of ever allowing my subscription to lapse.
In EXACTLY the same fashion I have downloads of various MS Operating Systems from Technet stored, yet have no intention to let that sub lapse either.
