I'll add my "thing": Fresh, clean drinking water. We in America rarely lack a constant supply except in times of natural disaster.

 Even in Las Vegas, where the average yearly rainfall is 3.3 inches, the amount of waste is appalling. I lived there almost 17 years and the usage just kept going up. Water use restrictions are sometimes put in place, but mainly for homeowners. The hotels, casinos and golf courses paid them no mind.

Other parts of the world would love to have just what we waste on swimming pools and golf courses. They often bathe in the same water they have to drink. 

Think about that when you leave that tap running.

Two things I take for granted are:

a) My rig. The truth is that like many others on here, I'd be lost without my computer. If I didn't have it I couldn't skin, I couldn't watch movies or access the internet to buy things online (outside of groceries I buy pretty much 99.9% of things online). I couldn't have created the digital artwork I have done so far, or the stuff I want to create in the days and years to come. But most importantly, I couldn't see or communicate with my partner in the US on a daily basis, or shoot things in the face with her when we play games together, which would leave me having to play single player with a bunch of AI bots that are generally as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Without her, I'd be more lost than I would be without the rig.

b)My health. I'll be the first to admit that my health isn't what it used to be. I used to be able to lift weights without a problem, and kick or punch my punchbag without it being absolutely necessary for me to limber up first. Now, my knees are starting to crack every time I stand up, and they get sore if I'm sat in the same position for too long. I can sometimes come out of a shower feeling out of breath. But despite it seeming pretty bad, I know that there are so many more things that could go wrong. My partner's illness really brings it home to me sometimes just how lucky I am health wise. My hands and legs obey me, I can feel things, and I can work for more than a couple of hours without feeling fatigued and needing to have a nap. Yet I know I still take it for granted at times; like when I'm putting cheese on every burger I eat, and every time I take a drag of a cigarette.

Great post Doc. I think we all take things for granted including loved ones. I have been away from my wife for almost 2 years now. When and if immigration gives her the approval to leave her country I will look her in the eyes, tell her how much I love and missed her and make her always feel like she is never taken for granted.

Terribly sorry to hear that, Ken. Where is she? Is she safe?

Here's to a speedy reunion!

I try to take for granted that people will respect all life, that drug lords will realize their sin and stop their actions, that the rich will realize their sin in not helping the deserving poor, that religious beliefs will be respected by all, that people will stop killing other people in the name of their God and beliefs, that we can all learn to get along with one another and live in harmony. The list goes on and on ...

I take way too much for granted don't I?

Since then things have changed.  It hurts like a bitch most days, but I'm glad I still have it.  Others weren't so lucky.

I do, however, take it for granted I'll hear more political bullshit from Canberra each day. 

Trouble is, the parliamentary dipshits down there never fail to deliver.
