Successor to Impulse will be boring

So Stardock is working on its successor to Impulse. As some of you know, Stardock sold Impulse to Gamestop this past spring.  Stardock is out of the digital distribution – for third parties – business.

So with the knowledge that we’ll only have our own stuff to purchase, download, and update, we’ve been building something new. And guess what? It’s practically invisible.  I don’t even have a cool screenshot to show you because, well, there’s not much there. It’s just about updating “your Stardock stuff”, largely automatically, largely in the background (all options of course).

I'm looking forward to checking out the E:WOM updates.

 

Does this apply only to updates, or can we also buy Stardock product?  Will we be able to buy GalCiv2 directly from you?  What about games from other developers that Stardock has published, and may publish in the future? And especially, what about E:FE - Can we get it from you?

These questions have been asked before.  Only vague answers have been given.  I accept that there may be practical, and possibly legal reasons for that.  I wonder if the deal with gamestop, makes it so that specifics cannot be released until Q2 2012?

Sounds       to me. (does 'invisible' sound at all?)

I do hope it'll have IRC for a *certain* Australian.

Things could get very ugly indeed if it doesn't...

I'm with Doc on hoping for a built-in IRC client. Maybe Stardock Central Light?

Also good to know that we'll be able to run it manually.

Just my personal opinion mind you, but I will take boring over some of the other options that may have been available. 

To me boring means, not much to look at but does what it is supposed to do with out fanfare and doesn't need to be updated every time you turn on the computer.

I can live with boring.

I'm with Philly on this one... no need for fancy schmancy when all we need is access to updates.

While Impulse did its job in that respect, it was still a bit over the top with colourful banners and promotional stuff.

In some instances boring - read plain/basic/ordinary - is better.... and I'll be much happier with a delivery system that does not foist upon me promotions for 3rd party games I'd never ever consider purchasing.  Yup, take that clutter out of it

Yep ... too chunky, too flashy.

Simple is good, you get less headaches with something basic.

Will be great... SDC was working with Linux... was never the case for Impulse...

I have one cool screenshot for soase...

A simple "download update" in the main menu of the application was perfect... Simple, fast and working perfectly... the K.I.S.S. principle was and remain a good principle...

You going to be selling stuff (especially games) elsewhere? I've done this Stardock specific client thing twice already, and sorry to say that I'm not playing along a third time. If future games aren't on Steam/D2D/Whoever then I'm not interested.
