Something is causing the icons on my desktop periodically to disappear on their own.

On your desktop or in a Fence?

Windows (I believe XP, Vista and Win 7) will periodically give you a notice after login and ask if you want to delete unused icons on the desktop. I don't think it effects anything in Fences, could be wrong.
