You might have seen my earlier post warning about scams occurring now in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan.
So how can good people avoid being scammed while trying to help less fortunate folks, or disaster victims?
Well, Consumer Reports put out a short article about that. There are additional things you could do, but these are the basics.

I strongly recommend reading these articles even if you can't give at present. They will really help you avoid getting scammed.
