"Download & Archive" question

I have been wondering for some time, as i have read quite a few comments, here and there, that the Object Desktop archives are OS dependent and that they are pretty much useless on different operative systems.

Now, if i download and immediately archive the Object Desktop applications, will there be a compatibility issue when i recover the archives to a different OS?!?? I am on XP now and i will be soon switching to a W7 64 bit. So if i purchase the OD now and archive that, after the download, will i be able to restore the applications in Windows 7?!??

W7 Professional and Ultimate, yes although there're some apps which aren't supported in x64. Do your research which.

These versions of W7 have XP compatibility modes.

I'd recommend leaving the apps you have on the XP machine there, and downloading separately onto the W7 machine.

But what after the subscription ends?!?? I would like to use it on the same machine, regardless of the OS.

Then I would suggest that after you install your new OS or, get your new machine (unclear from the OP). you contact support@stardock.com and they can provide you with links for the last versions of the software you were entitled to.

I would suggest, in any case creating a disk image of your current HDD from which you can transfer skins/documents, etc. to the new OS.

Also, verify with SD support you'll be able to do this. Supply the email/receipts you received when subscribing in your email to them.

From your post, it sounds like you plan to upgrade your OS soon. If you purchase OD now and upgrade your OS within a year, you can just install the W7 versions from Impulse - you won't 'need' to restore from any archives. You'll also be able to D/L & archive the W7 versions once you've upgraded.

If you upgrade your OS after your OD subscription expires, I think you would need to renew - I don't believe forward OS compatibility of archives is in the EULA or TOS.

I'm not shure how it works but!!!

I have just upgraded my HDD to a SSD and now none of my Object Desktop archives work at all (it installs but dose not work).....

anybody know why....????

Note: i did not clone my old hdd i wanted to start a fresh...

That's a different question. If you haven't changed OS, there is probably a technical issue of some sort relating to the SSD. I'd contact Stardock as DrJBHL advised above, with all your system info and purchase information.

Ok.
So if i purchase the Object Desktop and even though i have a new machine and a different OS then the one i had when i installed the enhanced versions of OD applications, Stardock's support will give me links to download the versions that i had, before my subscription ended?

I've read somewhere from a Stardock's support member that they do this out of courtesy and that people should archive their applications. But if the archives can not be restored, will the guys from Stardock give me links to download these apps, you know, after the end of my subscription??

The apps versions and their activation codes are in my Impulse account and i can download and activate them again after the subscription ends, or it doesn't work like that?

I believe (from what I've seen in other threads from responsible sources) Stardock has stopped supplying those links.

You should be able to restore the backed up/archived software. If you can't, for whatever reason, turn to support@stardock.com for help.

It seems that the only way you can use your purchased applications, error free (even if they are compatible with the upcoming windows OS or some of the older ones), is to keep subscribing for the Object Desktop. And i don't want to pay every year. I don't care about the upgrades either.

If the apps are compatible, they should be able to be restored on any OS that can support these apps, regardless of the one on which the archives were created. If it's that hard to find a solution for this, then fine, but it doubt that Stardock's brilliant programmers are scratching their heads over this one.

If this was possible, i would buy the OD right away. I know that one customer, more or less, doesn't make any difference, nonetheless, i feel that when i buy something, i want to keep using that and this "OS dependent archives" thing doesn't sound very convincing.

I know Stardock's fighting piracy, but i fail to see what this with the back up archives OS dependency has to do with it.

Not so Gorskin. You're not "one more customer more or less" . You're a member of the Community of people who love "skinning" and (if you'd like us to be), an extended online family.

And you can. I'm quoting a reply I gave on another thread and am adding a link that will show you how to do it. OK?

You should be doing that anyway to save hours of frustration and pain.

Like any backup the only way to be sure if it will work is to attempt restore even more so if your archive is being transferred to another storage device as it gives even more chance of corruption in the end it's a lot less hassle to re-sub than piss about trying to find an archive that'll work

Appears I was quite wrong about SD's apps not being "forward OS compatible" - the thread linked by DrJBHL makes that quite clear. There are at least two ways to get multi-OS compatible source files for restoration.

Man you Stardock people are nice. What can i say... After i buy the new machine, i'll get me some desktop objects... That thread about the archiving with the Impulse is fantastic... Thank you for explaining things so vividly DrJBHL.

Thanks, Gorskin but to be honest, They know SO much more, and there are lots of problems only they know how to fix. I try to lessen the load on them as many others do as well.
