morning boot time

6 minutes still seems a bit much....and three just for AVG. But I suppose as long as it works well when it does get there...that's what counts.

well, 6 minutes compared to 25+ is shorter and it did boot and didn't need to be reset.

This board had a problem with earlier bios releases with anything over 3 GB. That has since been corrected. My guess is that the board's memory controller is having problems initializing on a cold boot.

Do the basic Windows install and time the boot, if it's still slow, than address the bios issue

Prior to bios flash, test if it is indeed a memory issue. Take out all sticks down to 3 GB. My guess is you have 6x2.....take it down to 1x2 and boot.

We have reached that level, ye old peter principle. I'm not sure what exactly to do at this point.

here are the selections from the wizard results with utilities open.

the BIOS (14) are rom files most with words like "for use with new CPU..." the bios update tool Afudos is an exe within a zip.

no, that was second on the list, thought you wanted a bios update first.

just did a reboot in 2:38, windows is also still updating "stuff". I'll do a restart here...

**edit** 1:19 warm boot. I think we're okay with this but I'll do the memory thing but need to get a anti-static strap first. last time I added memory to my wife's work computer, well...

maybe it just needed a little burn in time???

That's not how it works....

You don't need a strap......unplug PSU from wall. Push Power button for 10 seconds, release and ground one hand to metal part of case (if it's all metal, any part is fine). Reach in with other hand, spread latches and take out ram (leave the one in closest to CPU).

That's not good .... I'm starting to lean towards a motherboard headed south....

put memory back in and booted in 1:10 minutes, did a cold boot at 1:09 minutes.
 

Live with it and see what happens.

Just out of curiosity, why are you turning this thing off at all?

force of habit I guess. back in the days (win3.1/win98) when a boot helped to release memory that some programs hogged onto even when they were shut down. I've equated a clean boot with a clean slate, has that changed?

and then there is always the update or new program that requires a reboot, but...

I agree, Greg... why turn it off? I don't think it'll prolong the life if kept in a well ventilated area (and use Jafo's trick of some t.p. over the fan to keep out the dust).

Yes....the days of 256k of memory are gone.....get over it. You have 12 GB!!

Re-boots aren't the problem..... that said, the only thing that can restart your machine after an extended wait is Windows....put it on "Prompt when new updates are available". Nothing else should be allowed to do a restart or change anything without you allowing it. As far as new programs, that's much easier...... stop installing the shit!!

You do understand you're in charge of this computer and not the other way around..... right???

was actually glad to open the case, it needed the removal of some dust bunnies.

How much dust??

not a lot, some on the bottom of the case and on the V8 radiators. I clean the outside vents/grills about once a month and the insides about every 6 months.
