'Fences' removed important system32 file?

"msvcr80.dll" causing BSOD upon Boot.

Hello peeps.

Few days ago I came upon this program and gave it a chance. The program installed without any problems and worked as it should. The next day as I turned on my PC it wouldn't go pass the "Starting Windows"-screen, but caused a BSOD instead. I did a System Repair which corrected the problem (the error found can be seen in "external link" which I added) - it restored the file but also removed Fences.

Has this issue been reported before?

It is merely a guess that Fences caused it, but the system did remove the program and this sudden error occured after installing Fences.

BSOD was most likely caused by something else. Fences doesn't remove important system files. When's the last time you did a good virus scan? Problems with trojans is more likely the cause.

I use Fences on 4 machines one is W7 64 bit the others are Vista 32 bit and one other is XP virtual and I can say I have never seen this problem occur.

It sounds like the system Repair used a restore point from before you installed fences . So by default fences would be gone.

WM2 is correct. Also, Fences never touches System Files.

One of the major distinguishing features of Stardock's programs is that they specifically do not do that.

That's what system repair does ... takes your PC back to a time before the problem occurred. It doesn't actually 'repair' anything.

What you should do in a case like that is

go to elevated command prompt and type sfc /scannow

that will repair any missing system files without having to do a 'restore' and your software will remain untouched.

I realise doing a System Restore would cause the program to be gone, I just thought it would restore the file from the OS disc only.

Some time ago, but im thinking if I did have a virus, trojan or anything else i'd of felt it now? Im usually never infected.

That's why I said look for virus problems. System files don't just disappear. Also, could be a hardware problem. HD getting wonky??

No, it's rather new actually (Barracude .12-series.) Im just gonna do a virus scan and see if anything occurs. Thanks again.

Hi,

Yes, one of the things we put as the first and foremost feature of Fences is that it never deletes files. If you cannot find a file on your desktop, view the desktop through Explorer and move the shortcut/file off of the desktop and back again where you want it to be. Again, Fences never deletes files.
