Control Panel Desktop Icon does not have Fences Context Menu in Win 7

Cannot keep Control Panel from fences double click hiding

Dear Stardock,

 

I can't help but be irritated by the fact there is no obvious way to keep the Control Panel icon visible when double clicking the desktop using Fences.

Is there some kind of user cfg or ini for Fences that I can put in a manual entry for this desktop item?

You should be able to right-click on the icon and select "Exclude this icon from Fences' quick-hide".

The lack of that option in the control panel icon alone is the explicit reason for my request for assistance.

Unfortunately the problem still lies unresolved.

Try this:

- Right click on the 'Control Panel' Icon

- From the drop-down  menu select 'Create Shortcut'. This will create a Control Panel shortcut on your desktop.

- Now you can delete the original Control Panel Icon if you so inclined. You can also rename the new shortcut to 'Control Panel'

- Right click on the shortcut and select 'Exclude this icon from Fences' quick-hide'

You are done!

The problem is that the control panel icon placed on the desktop through Desktop properties is one of the "Special" icons on the desktop.  On the context menu you do see, you should have an option to create a shortcut to the control panel.  This you can exclude.

Yes but I don't want a shortcut of the Control Panel. I want an icon like every other default one (Computer / Network / Recycle Bin).

Now that we know there is no official support for a Control Panel context menu option, I would like to respectfully request one.

You can switch off the shortcut overlay globally via registry. This way no icon on desktop will ever look as a shortcut. If this helps, google for "remove shortcut overlay" to find out how.

It is quite possible that there is no way of adding a custom item into the Control Panel desktop right-click menu because it is just that special.

Also it would be interesting to know *why* you don't want a short cut. Is there any particular scenarios in which this is inconvenient or doesn't work? May be there are work-arounds for these scenarios that would allow you to achieve what you want to achieve.

You raise some good questions, zespri.

Firstly, I have many shortcuts on my desktop, not thousands cluttered, but 15 odd ones within fences. When it comes to default Windows desktop icons however, I dislike the shortcut overlay and prefer the functionality of the default icon. Besides this, there is no way, as far as I am aware, of turning off/on selective shortcut overlays and turning them all off would cause me a migraine, naturally. To answer your question more thoroughly, I like order to my PC. I'm compulsive about it.

 

Having said that however, I'm quite happy to wait for Stardock to include fences support for the standard control panel icon if possible at all. It's the only one of the default icons that disappears when double clicking the desktop, a minor annoyance, but worth waiting for an official report on the issue.

Actually we added this as a new feature in Fences (to hide the shortcut arrow), would that meet your requirements?

Create a shortcut to Control panel on desktop then go to personalize and un-check control panel in change desktop icons. Fences will allow you to remove shortcut arrows, Prior to that I used Ultimate tweaker http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista or winbubbbles http://sites.google.com/site/winbubbles/ to remove the short cut arrows both programs offer numerous tweaks that many including myself have found very beneficial
