Desktop Earth Mod

I am looking for a way to make skins for the Desktop Earth. I found some good ones online for the Moon, Jupiter, and Mars but I am trying to make my own. I want to be able to stretch out a circular picture so it looks like the Earth map. I'd like to try and make a golfball or deathstar or something fun.
