The next WB update will force the random feature to off.

The new UI does not support this feature right now.  We may add random wallpapers back to WB 7.1

If you want to have random wallpapers in the meantime, I have two suggestions. One is a program I used for yars, until very recently, called Automatic Wallpaper Changer. It has many options and you can specify how often to change wallpapers. I have so many that I set it to every 4 hours.

The second suggestion is only if you have Windows 7. It has a built in wallpaper changer. Just right click on the desktop and click Personalize. At the bottom of the window click on Desktop Background. When the new window shows you can pick a directoy or Library to get your wallpapers from, set how ofen you want them to change, and how to display them. I made a new library with all of my wallpaper directories in it so it would be easier.

At first I wasn't using the built in feature because when I made the library windows didn't seem to show direcories more than 2 levels deep. I decided I should put most of them together anyway and ended up with just 3 directories in the Wallpaper Library, and now they work fine.

Thanks for all the input (I just watched Short Circut with my nephew, so Johny 5 saying input has been stuck in my head!) WB should really have kept the random wallpaper. I don't understand why that feature was removed.  I will look into the Desktop Slideshow. I have Dreamscapes but when I reinstalled windows I never bothered to re-install it.  Great tip on Windows 7, had no idea that is a feature. In another six months or so when the initial bugs are out I plan on upgrading to Windows 7. Maybe then I will get a break from those over eager (NOT RESPONDING) messages in Vista!!!!

And alas here I found what I was fearing... wallpaper changer gone from WB7, without even Stardock telling you the news.

I can understand that wallpaper changing was not the core business of WB, but at least you should inform people when removing some functionality from an upgrade.

All in all, knowing this I would at least have considered keeping my trusted WB6.4 until this was reintroduced (Neil talks about WB7.1, but it seems far from sure).

Of course there are plenty alternative apps that do this job, even freeware ones, but the point was exactly to avoid any uncessary cluttering of programs in memory.

The randomness is not crucial.... it is the automation that matters most, i.e. the ability to change, at boottime or every hour, the wallpaper without user intervention. This was readily done with WB6. Random selection is just ad additional plus.

Also I have read somewhere in these forums that the functionality is still present in WB7 but there is no UI for it: so it's just a matter of a small combo list being added in some corner of the interface for wallpapers? Good news and bad news at the same time..... Why leave it out when so little an effort was required?

Do you know what is the timeframe to have the automatic wallpaper change re-enabled, if ever?

Next upgrade or which one after that? And will it take 2 weeks... or 2 months... or whatever?
