Fences 0.99 installer wants .NET 2.0

Please see the image at right.  I am running Vista 64-bit SP1.  I presumably already have .NET 3.5.  I tried to install 2.0 just in case, but ran into problems.  First the link in the dialog is for 32-bit OSes.  Second, the 64-bit .NET 2.0 SP1 version out there doesn't install on Vista.

Since the next button was enabled, I thought I could attempt to ignore the issue, but no dice.  The button does nothing.

There's nothing wrong with the installer, or there would be tons of replies to this thread. There seems to be something quirky with your system.

Try installing THIS, and after you've installed it, run windows update and allow it install any necessary updates.

If that doesn't work, I suggest you completely uninstall all versions of .net and then reinstall.

I question that Vista will let you uninstall any version of .NET that it comes with. .NET 2.0 would certainly be on that list.

.NET 2.0 is required on XP where it is not installed by default.  It should already be installed on Vista, as up through version 3 is included with it.  If you get prompted to install on Vista, or on an XP system where .NET is installed already, most likely .NET is corrupt on the system and needs to be repaired.

Uninstall the version you have then re-install .NET 2.0...or...you can run the installer again but you'll probably get a message saying it's already there. First suggestion is easiest.

from a question at the MS Discussion Groups where poster asked where to find 2.0 came this answer:

 

If you have Vista you have 2.0. It is intregral to Vista. You don't have
to do anything. It was installed along with the rest of the OS when the
computer was first set up or updated from XP. It is not a separate download
and it does not appear in the "Uninstall a Program" list in the Control
Panel. Any other versions of the framework that you install will appear
there, however, as well as all updates.

This has worked for us on Vista for fixing .NET.

Well, sfc did make "repairs", but it reset the themes for Logon Studio and BootSkin.  It also broke the Windows theme engine.  Which version of Fences am I running now?  Well, the installer now ran, but it won't take affect. Somewhere, it stopped the install after requesting a reboot.

wow, never heard of it doing that and it never happened on my xpsp3

Anybody seen Yrag?

Yes, it will do that.  You should simply be able to reapply them after.

It also broke the Windows theme engine.

Not sure what this means.  Did you have some sort of theming patch applied, like VistaGlazz or something?

Which version of Fences am I running now? Well, the installer now ran, but it won't take affect. Somewhere, it stopped the install after requesting a reboot.

Try verifying the install through Impulse.

It finally works agin.  Thanks Shirley.  Yes, I do use VistaGlazz, but the problem with Aero was that it not only unpatched the DLLs, but switched to a Windows Classic theme that disables Aero.

Try rerunning your Vista Experience Index and then applying Aero from the Windows theme options.  This will usually work.
