another bummed out wiki post

I originally included this with my questioning post on premultiplied alpha but realized that I was really looking for answers with that one and this is just a rant.

I know lets go to the wiki and see if there is any information

okay so there is no wiki info (unusual SNOT) I'll leave a short little note in the wiki section...

You do not have permission to edit pages, for the following reason: The action you have requested is limited to users in the group Users.

well I certainly fit the "user" profile, I know, I'll click on the user link and see what someone else's definition of user might be.

I do remember a time (the post is stuck in bold, sorry) when I could edit and I did regarding midi buttons. that they were limited in size and had to be a bmp. I went back to the wiki help and what is there is;

Greg....I understand your frustration.

I'm sure if you want to change the current Wiki or post to it, there's a Tutorial on how to do it. If it's malfunctioning, why not notify Jafo or I.D.?

A fully functional Wiki, updated by knowledgeable members is in everyone's interest...and it's everyone's responsibility as well.

I dunno, seems to me the problem with a wiki, imo, is who wants to take time, and its quite time consuming, to write good help material.. only to have it edited by other people who may or may not agree with your view on the subject matter. Never really have understood the whole concept.

not necessarily and this post is identified as a "rant" to begin with. AND it's not about me being able to post but the lack of posts to begin with.

BUT, I just had a flash thought. WC might consider making a requirement for up and coming master skinners to contribute a certain number of wiki entries as part of the nebulous promotion process. AND make it retroactive so that our current master skinners can impart some of that esoteric knowledge. great community involvement concept with tangible results.

No one's gonna jump at that one...I wish the Masters would, but it's voluntary and holding an armlock on someone rankles. I wouldn't wish to see that happen. Contributions should be free and done spontaneously. The desire to help should not be because of a "requirement" or someone else 'bossing you'. Totally counter-productive imho.

Aren't there enough "rules" in life already? I'm in favor of freedom.

We are not going to require anyone to contribute, but I would certainly encourage anyone to help out as the Wiki is a great community resource that I often refer to.

Im not sure I agree with saying there are a lack of posts there, if you go through the Wiki there are tutorials, guides, etc. for most Stardock apps plus others.

they already have some rules/requirements assigned to obtaining levels and community involvement is a requirement. Rather than being a member of some other site (DA for example) it would behoove WC to help support their products by imparting master skinner knowledge to the plebes.

AND, meaning no disrespect here, but if I recall correctly, you don't skin. it would be very nice to know why something is not working as it is frustrating when it doesn't. a quick jump to a wiki page would be preferable to asking/waiting for an answer in the forums.

I am referring to the wiki links out of SKS6, I know there is information in the wiki from the site BUT that is not what I am referring to.

Well, speaking for myself only, I prefer to help on the forums, more dynamically interactive, easier to problem solve.

 

I would say tho, over the years, the majority of learning I have done for myself has been by myself, If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Its very time consuming but also very satisfying.. imo. Trial and error goes hand in hand with skinning. Some of the best skinners, also have the best work ethics, don't give up, persevere. Another good way of learning is to pull apart skins that you know work well in the area you're working on. If all else fails, the forums are here to ask anything that is on your mind. Usually someone can be of assistance.

A Wiki by nature is made up of volunteers, requiring anyone to contribute isn't the way to go imo.

without quoting John's post, that's pretty much how I learn also. Sometimes I just need a push in the right direction.

It would be nice if they remove the links from SKS, it's not being utilized, there's no reason for it to be included.

I did say this was just a rant, right?

Heh, sort of agree there... think of it this way... expect there not to be any content and be pleasantly surprised when there is.

Correct, I don't. I said I favor the updated Wiki. If you're gung ho, and find a wiki that needs updating, do it and submit it. Also, read I.D.'s response....he is (apart from being Admin) a respected Edler in this Community, and what he says, I've observed, usually has really sound reasoning behind it.

Wiki is a DIY ... you could start a project to update it and approach various Masters to help you...

I'm not qualified to offer suggestions at the level of a solid wiki entry, this should be accomplished by individuals that have a certain level of competency and understanding of the program, it's limitations, etc.

you said as such many times I didn't realize that you meant figuratively and not literally and I didn't check first which is uncool.

Editing is always easier than initial writing.  The nice thing about wikis is that oftentimes a comunity will come together to correct work that they could have written.
