Two weeks ago I managed to get into a local shelter. Not something to be proud of but...it's a start. They have numerous programs for getting people back on their feet and seems to me considering those I've talked to they work pretty good.
Anyway...they have a computer, a Dell Pentium II...156 mb of memory. Slow as s**t with an eighty gig HD. I installed the 7 Remix on it and while it looks damn good and went in no problem at all it took more than twenty minutes to do. They were running XP sp2. I'm tempted to install sp3 but I'm afraid it'll give the old machine a heart attack. There's no internet access and that kinda sucks. I guess they're tryin' to keep all the nasties off the machine. One of the first I things had to do was defrag the thing. It was a mess. That helped a little bit. Then ran CCleaner through and cleaned up most of the garbage left on it. Short cuts that didn't work because programs were uninstalled and left so much behind etc.
So...I got this doorstop up and running only to find out the CD drive crapped out. Pulled it out and trashed it then installed an old burner I had left over from another rig I sold some time ago. Had to repair a loose connection going to the LCD, 15 inch, because someone got careless trying to move it. Then last night had to explain to a staff member how to rid her home machine of a few bugs that got into it. She was using an antivirus I never heard of...Trends or Trenz...I don't know which. Told her to do a system restore back one month then uninstall her antivirus program(McCaffey) before Trends...go to cnet.com or softpedia.com and download either avira or avg free...both work a lot better than the ones she was using. I'm waiting to hear how she made out. So progress is made and I'm on my way to being a happier camper.
