DesktopX themes........

Sound effects or not?

    I just wanted to get a general idea of whether or not people want sounds in the DesktopX themes or not. If you don't mind, voice your opinion here. Now that Vista gives us the ability to control these sounds, as a whole, I wish to know what you want. Thanks for your time!

Sounds can be very nice...but make sure there is an easy way to mute them.

Don't care for them, myself, and I don't include them. I never have speakers on unless I'm playing a video or music.

I haven't figured that one out yet, I will tho. Meanwhile, as I stated, Vista users can turn off, or turn down only the DX sounds. The speaker in your systray, when clicked, will bring up sliders for each sound source running and you can control it there. There may be a way to adapt the recoloring script that Martin posted on the " what would you like to see in DX 4 " thread to raise and lower volume for DX sounds, dunno about toggling.

My recent themes have been sound free, or near sound free. But I seem to remember comments when I was PDJ, about how cool the sound effects were.

I don't like them in themes. Even the Gef themes. In Winstep you can easily turn them off. I think the Windows sounds are enough as it is. I'm still on XP so for the DX themes I just delete the sounds in Builder mode and then resave the theme. Works. The sounds are too much in my opinion. Hey, customization is all about fitting it to what you want.

never been a fan of sounds in windows, being that i work in so many different places, sounds and draw attention or comments, etc.  So i usually have my volume off on my machine, "just in case" someone put stupid music in a web page, or some other sounds.  Just my 0.02

This is good input. I still like the "skin for yourself theory" but I get a lot of pleasure knowing that others find my work useful. I am growing accustomed to less sound, as Vista is a bit quieter than XP.

I like the idea but as other people have mentioned make it easy to mute the sounds

Honestly for me, no Jim!

I totally disable all event sounds.  Never really use them much because I run Z-5500's in a surround configuration.

Even when they're quiet it feels like someone's tapping you on the shoulder, so sounds can be too trippy and sometimes disturbing.

Thanx for asking and for keeping DX on the edge.

Sounds that go with the overall theme concept are okay in my thinking, they should be subtle and the theme should provide a way of muting them if the user desires. 

A little is okay, but sounds can go overboard, lets see, Cursor FX, Sound Packager and Theme sounds, might even be some duplication going on.  If the user has the means to choose, then it should be fine. 

Not every skinner adds or uses sounds in their theme, but hmmmm, Curried Cabbage Theme with the Gas Sound Packager and some extra Theme sounds.  It has potential to be a 'Stinker'

My computer is muted most of the time anyways

IMO, it's hard to have matching sounds, so most of the time they seem almost irrelevant...

A toggle might be possible through script?
