I went shopping for some new speakers for my truck at work. Being that I work construction I use portable speakers that I can plop on the dash to listen to my Ipod touch while driving. I needed some thing small yet fairly loud as our trucks are not exactly the quietest in side, Especially when sitting next to a bunch of equipment working. After shopping at frys and other shops I spotted the "Logitech - mm32 Portable Speakers for Apple® iPod® and Most MP3 Players" at Bestbuy. While other speakers were larger and seemed to offer what would be better sound, I needed something low profile to sit on the dash and not be in the way.
I gave them a quick test there at the store as they have them set up on display with power supplied. After hearing them for a bit I decided to plunk the $56.99 down. Upon getting them home I decided to play with them. I hooked them up to my Ipod and started messing around with various games, movies, music. The sound was suprisingly rich and full, while they dont reach the deepest base they still carry enough depth to make what ever you are listening to an excellent experience. The High's are crisp and clear even with volume's on both the speakers and Ipod at max. They were also loud enough to inspire the MRS to give me "the look" for drowning out her TV....
So after moving to the garage for safetys sake, I continued my testing.
Since they worked awesome for my Ipod I decided to test them for other uses. With the 3.5mm headphone jack I could plug them in to various items, and I did. First came my old Walkman cassette player. * yes I still have one with working cassettes* my old walkman came alive with the sounds of The Cars "Moving in Stereo", again my ears were pleased. After a bit of reminiscing of former days of glory * I was once the world most renound Air guitarist* at least in my own mind..
.I decided to move on. Next came my Laptop, While having ok built in speakers, they lack rich sound and are quite tinny.
I have decided that these do quite well as portable laptop speakers, they are perfect for making Presentations with a laptop. With sound much larger than the size of the unit, they fit the bill for being heard even in the busiest of meetings. Having rich full sound of larger and more costly portable speakers, they work great for what ever you are presenting. Also being fairly loud they make sleeping thru even the most boring presentation difficult.
Packing up is a snap ,With only one wire one can simply unplug and slip the unit right in to the custom carrying bag supplied, and your all done. No messing with wrapping 2 speaker wires and cables etc.. *Tho If you want to use the supplied Power adaptor instead of the 4 AA batteries there will be a second wire to roll up* The AA's will last up to 8 hours so unless you are having one heck of a meeting, they should suffice..
The down sides: Yes even the best toys have them.
Ipod's fit loosely. It has an adjustment wheel to try to secure the Ipod, but with both my 5th gen video and first gen Ipod touch both weren't secured enough to move it without having them fall out. Logitech would do well to redesign it a bit, to get a better grasp on the player's. If you are just setting it on a desktop or some thing the Ipod sits nicely in the holder, unless the desktop is bumped.
It does not charge the Ipod unless you snap your Pods cable in to the removable base and plug it in to a USB power supply. * doing this Blocks the Headphone jack on the Ipod touch thus making listening while charging an impossibility**
All in all I would give them a 4 out of 5 star rating. Sound quality was suprisingly better than expected for such a small item, and they are versatile enough to be quite useful. But the lacking of a secure dock and lack of Ipod charging capability, made it not quite a perfect unit.
