Anybody Here Got A netbook?

Do you customize your mini laptop?

Hello everyone.

I was just wondering if any of you guys bought one of those netbooks. I have a Dell Mini 9 (and I love it). I stayed away from customization and other apps due to fear it would take up system resources and battery power... but I couldn't stay away from a customized desktop!!!! Besides, with a screen that small, you need to make the most out of it.

My Dell Mini has 1gb of ram and 16gb harddrive (actually an internal flash drive) with sd ports and junk... so I don't really have to worry about space too much or vurtual memory due to being able to get an sd card with 32gb (probably get the 16gb one cause i don't want too much stuff on this laptop)

ANYway, the point of this rabling post is this: what do you customize you netbok with?

Right now I am using Virtual Desktop, Windowblinds (so I can get the small title bar and such) and Keepsafe to save backups to the sdcard and the portable hard drive I have (320gb). I am thinking about givng Right Click a try and trying this new program Stardock is making called Fences.

I am hoping to write a article on WinCusto about customizing netbooks, so any feedback would be cool.

wife has samsung nc 10 netbook,10" came with igb memory but added another gb.160hd.has windowblinds,iconpackager,cursor fx.and rocketdock.no slowdown at all,allmost as fast as my last laptop,screen is great as well and biult in webcam.bottom line is its no problem to customize.

Got a dell mini here too with linux... 16gig solidstate hard drive and 2gigs ram.

Thus I'm leaving mine as is with no customizing here... due to the fact it is used mainly for my work inviroments as such the case. it is domain only and security is very high for good reasons.

also bought the wife a new dell hybrid studio 5850 duo core with 4 gigs ram and 250 hd for her HD TV in the livingroom - she uses it as a DVR and the family resource for pics and general browsing for the relativews and in laws... aaaahhhh....~!

I would customize my mini but I feel like you it makes the battery life shorter - which at this point it last me most of the day at work depending on how I use it as such. I like it as is tho with linux.

I customize my Netbook with pretty much the same as I do with my regular desktop. I especially like RightClick on the Netbook.

Dell Mini 9 here as well. When I got it initially it had 1 gb RAM, 16 gb SSD, running XP SP3. I immediately installed WB and Object Dock, and had no problems running either. I have since upped the RAM to 2 gb, SSD to a Runcore 32 gb, and installed Vista. I have Object Dock running, but haven't put WB on yet. I don't really feel the need for other customization apps right now, but since Stardock offers so many cool utilities, I'll consider it in the near future.

Hopefully in the very near future, I will be talking more about Netbooks, and the associated customization of them. I can say no more.

hmmmm... I wasn't aware that you could add RAM to the Dell Mini... I tend to see that my RAM always going somewhere around 650MB. While I still have another 300+ ram, i think its cutting it too close... do you mind having a 16GB flash drive when others get 40GB flash or 120GB hard drives? For me, i didn't buy it to store gobs of info, so having 16GB is fine (especially since i can get a 32GB flash SD card for more room)

Well, at any rate, I am glad it would seem that someone is taking up the issue of customizing the netbook. I can't wait to read it.... Island Dog, you can bet you will get a really long comment from me on it lol I got allot to say on it.

Currently installed:

Windowblinds (using Gant or Dinks... until I can find some more small form factor skins)

Keepsafe (really helpful)

Honorable mention: Rightclick, Icon Packager, Icon X, CursorXP... thought about installing this stuff, but changed my mind due to space on drive and the use of more memory.

Upgrading the RAM and the SSD is very easy. Dell made those two quite accessible...just unscrew two screws and remove the panel, and those two components are right there. I too am looking forward to Island Dog's discussions on netbooks.
