Over the last 10 years cable TV channels really seem to have lost their way. As an example, today the TLC network is airing the Miss America pageant. TLC used to be The Learning Channel, but it's changed from that original purpose over the last several years, just as a bunch of other channels have also changed in much the same way.
AMC used to show American Movie Classics but now shows much more modern films with quite a lot of what is shown far from classic on most people's lists.
MTV was Music Television and actually showed, well, Music Videos.
Nick at Nite's TV Land used to show the classics from Nick at Nite, but now much of what is shown is more modern stuff.
More and more of what is on is nothing but cheap reality TV programming that I would call junk. I really do wish I could turn on the channels that I used to and see more of the programming that I used to, but it seems that the networks know better than me what people want to see (despite dwindling ratings and reduced viewership for the stuff that they do air).
