Desktop Software Applications, Webapps, and Projects We're Most Thankful For

I love Lifehacker. The other day they listed their favorite free apps. I have used enough of them and seen many of them mentioned here at WC. I thought I would take a second to provide some feedback. Links to all of these didn't copy over but are availalbe at the Lifehacker site.

Have fun and tell us what you think of these.

1. Firefox	Love the extensions
2. VLC Media Player	Used to use. Not a bad app
3. Ubuntu	Dual boot to this sometimes but not often. It's the *nix I'd use if I had to.
4. Open Office	Still a bit slow but gets the job done
5. Pidgin	Great all-in-on chat client. It's my IRC of choince
6. Launchy	Never used
7. Digsby	Never used
8. Gmail	It's my go to mail client
9. Adium	When I had the Mac this was my chat client
10. CCleaner	A mainstay for those of us who install and unistall often
11. Picasa	The new plug-ins make this even better
12. AutoHotKey	No knowledge of
13. Google	Everyone but Jafo loves this. It must be good, right?
14. Quicksilver	Too Mac for me
15. GIMP	It makes my brain bleed but it's free and powerful
16. Foobar 2000	I use this to re-tag my music. Powerful.
17. Thunderbird	Used to use it before gmail.
18. 7-Zip	Oh yeah baby. Right there.
19. DropBox	Sharing skins through this is super easy. Been using Mesh more lately though.
20. uTorrent	Not much of a torrentor . . I stick with bittorrent
21. Winamp	Stopped using years ago. Didn't do anything that much better than anything else.
22. Google Apps	I wrote this list in that.
23. AVG Antivirus	Gets the job done with lowish resource use
24. Evernote	Never heard of this. May have to look it up
25. IrfanView	Been using this since the internet was a baby
26. Opera	Meh. Never did so much more that I needed it
27. Chrome	Played with it . . but why switch from FF?
28. Google Calendar	Oh. Yeah.
29. HandBrake	Never tried it
30. Skype	My Mom is in Iraq and we use this now and again. I used it to do the WC Skincast
31. Linux	See Ubuntu
32. Paint.NET	Easy and gets the job done. Istart here and fire up GIMP when needed.
33. Ad-Aware	I used to use this but don't anymore. Using Windows Defender
34. Avast Antivirus	Using AVG but have heard good things here
35. Google Docs	See the other google entries
36. LogMeIn	I've used this with SD tech support a few times. Easy like pie.
37. Transmission	No need with bittorrent
38. TrueCrypt	LOVE THE HELL OUT OF THIS!
39. Amarok	I don't do sound manips much but this is what I use.
40. FileZilla	It's a standard for a reason. It rocks.
41. Notepad++	Notepad works well enough for me.
42. PortableApps.com	Tried and was satisfied but not my thing
43. Rocket Dock	Heh. I'll stick with OD+
44. Spybot Search & Destroy	Used to use it but not so much anymore
45. UltraVNC	This rocks for getting the job done.
46. VirtualBox	I use this and VirtualPC. I like the snapshots here more.

I listen to almost all my music (local, services, radio) through my Logitech Squeezebox. Everything gets listed to my last.fm account availalbe anywhere else.

I only use teh windows soundsytem to listen to Vonage VM and games.

Oh yeah baby. Right there.

That has got to be one of the best free apps out....does everything you need it to do, and it doesn't confuse the Hello out of you.

15. GIMP

It makes my brain bleed but it's free and powerful

Not sure why it makes your brain bleed...so very easy to use. Of course, I graduated up from PhotoImpact 3.4 a few years ago, and haven't gone back.

Chrome....I use it when FireFox doesn't work on a site... IE is just too slow....
