I just tried DS for the first time. My system is XP sp3 home and I have an agp (ATI AIW 9600xt) card and a Hyundaii Imagequest L90D+ LCD at full 1280x1024 resolution, so I get this warning prompt that agp is not supported yet but also lets me apply it too. Anyway I got earth to run but it's really kind of sluggish loading it, I play it about 1/2 the speed and it works, not super smooth though. I then tried grassy field and again after it finally loaded it plays for a bit really good and then locks, I tried this in full screen and in center. I did also get the black screen but I could eventually get out, just takes so long loading stuff. I know my pc parts are old and I'm planning on upgrading nearly everything in my case soon, just haven't gotten around to it yet. It's hard to part with the Abit NF7-S v2, it's a legendary board. Things like this give me boost to upgrade.
