Feature suggestion: Subtabs

I have tons of icons in different categories. Using just a single tabset is not really practical for my needs. So it would be awesome if support could be added for subtabs. Either you understand what I mean right away, or you're totally lost now (what the h**k am I on about???). IF you get it, fine. Don't read on. The rest of this post is just a clarification.

I have a feeling this really would benefit from some images, but I'll try to explain in words, as I don't have the proper software for design installed at the moment.

Currently the default tabs ends up "outside" the dock area (which some skins circumvent creating "integrated" tabs). It would be insanely sweet to be able to create subtabs that integrate into the dockarea, and have main tabs on the outside. My Games tab could have subtabs Online/Offline or my Media tab could have Playing/Editing/Burning subtabs.

I hope my general idea is somewhat clear, it would make the object dock the main dock on the block... Ehm, well, it already is, but it would help keep it there.

Have you seen teh impulse dock or the Dell Dock? I'd guess we'll see something like that at some point.

I don't see anything there that I can't do with OD already. I use a tabbed dock for programs I don't use too frequently, and keep a clean zooming dock for docklets/frequently run software. My idea is meant to extend the usability and configurability of the tabbed dock in OD+, which is great, but slightly too limited. I may draw up some pictures a bit later today to better illustrate what I mean.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the bolded statement. How many tabs are we talking? Because I don't know your familiarity with OD +, I'll state this: You can drag the edges of tabs to resize just like an Explorer window. Place your cursor on or near an edge or corner and you will get a resize cursor, then drag away.

This would greatly help understand your problem. However, I do think a sub-tab feature would be cool. In the meantime, have you checked out the Stacks docklet? That could reduce the amount of stuff you physically place on your dock, while still giving you access to all of it if you placed those shortcuts in a folder and then associated that folder with the stack. You can run as many stacks as you want. I currently run 4 on 1 tabbed dock.

Yeah, thats what I pictured also. However, what I meant I'd like to see is your problem. How the tabs are "outside" the dock area as you said in the original post. Have you tried to drag the edges like I said?

Ahhhh, I see. I thought you meant that the tabs were "hanging" off the right side of the dock, which happens if the dock is too small and the margins aren't set up right. Disregard everything I said except "I do think a sub-tab feature would be cool."

Heh, no need to be feeling silly. As Scott Adams neatly put it (as I recall it); We're all idiots, just at different occasions. (Read "The Dilbert Principle" for a full explanation, this is NOT an insult.)

Also, I'd like to add a small idea I got while browsing around to kill time... Would look really pretty to have a rollodex rotation effect when switching tabs.
