I never got to watch Australian Idol as I was living in a house which had no TV (great idea to start with as we thought we'd listen to more music and read more, but alas we spent a lot more time and money at the pub across the road) I did watch popstars though. And I loved it. I loved it so much that I actually turned down invitations to go out so that I could watch it. The show was a steaming pile of crap and I enjoyed every odiforous whiff. I know exactly where you're coming from. Admitting that you like these shows feels as though you may as well tattoo 'LOSER' on your forehead. Perhaps even have the mirror image tattooed on so that everytime you see your reflection you have a strong reminder of your own sadness.
But the thing is you realise that it is embarrassing to like these shows (and don't care all the same, which rocks!). Over here in the UK, people actually get emotionally involved in all this stuff. When Pop Idol came to the final and a VERY large lady called Michelle McManus won against a much better male singer (I hate to say it, she got the sympathy vote) people were distraught! There were kilometres of column space devoted to the 'scandal' in all the papers - even the reputable ones. I couldn't believe it!
So enjoy you guilty pleasure. You can rest in the comforting knowledge that there are people out there who actually let their very happiness be determined by the outcomes of these shows.
Rock on!
