heh yes I used Black vipers services and configuration guides to stop all unnecessary services.

Ahhhh, those XP-times. I remember I usually had XP running under 30 Processes too, but now on Vista I am constantly at between 55 and 60 (unless I loose my beloved SD-products.....).

Does Black viper have Vista as well? I haven't had a look at that page for ages.

Black Viper is the best! And yes he's got VistaSP1 services.

blackviper.com

I'm still on XPSP2 and his registry services tools worked great for new builds. Had to turn on a few things after that but for the most part they work great. Have fun!

I've had new installs of XP down to 18(17 without the taskmanager entry)but the best I could get Vista was about 43...course I havnt researched it as much as XP so I'm sure there had to be a few more that could have gone.

I'm not suprised at the number of processes running in Vista...the hard drive grinds away for about 8 minutes after boot...must take a long time to load and unload all those useless services.

Cool, I'll take a look at that tonight. See what I can cut out. I don't notice a lot of slowdown but anything that doesn't NEE to be running...Thanks for the tip.

It's not the # of processes that counts. Check your handle count IR. You want to get it down below 12,000 consistently and you will have a tight ship. A process that only uses 40 handles has little to no impact on your resources where a process that has 500 or more is a heavy hitter.

For instance wcesmgr.exe (MS active sync)only uses a bit over 5mb memory but has 548 handles and is more overhead than cobian.exe (a backup program) that uses 8mb memory but only 113 handles.

Tho...I find trimming the extras as well as dropping any heavy hitting items keeps my baby humming like a bird

I hadnt really thought of it like that...but it makes sense to me...I mostly just go for the obvious...services auto-loaded by apps that are not even running.

Arrrrrrrrr ye be sayin'that this here thread be a disappointment to ye KG lasse?

You are all beginners!:

- you stand sideways with a slightly wide stance...

- you put your hand on our hip (at least one, better two)

- you lower your head slightly and make sure there is absolutely no smile on your face. (the best would be something of a "I am really depressed"-look)

- you take one of your hands from your hip to pull off your sunglasses

- you use your best Horacio voice to say the line, using short...and often...disrupted sentences.....

If you really run a tight ship run msconfig and check your start up programs. if you have disabled some (or lots) and the entries haven't been deleted from the registry, they'll clutter up the msconfig startup area with unwanted entries. Use MSConfig Cleanup. Works great! MSConfig Cleanup

TweakVista works well for Vista.
For XP I like the Startup manager that's part of SecureProcess [beta] (part of the semi-active ThinkDesk)
