OD Plus 1.9 Standby Performance Problem?

I'm experiencing serious performance issues on my notebook computer (Alienware Area 51m 766, 3Ghz, 1GB RAM, 128MB graphics, Windows XP SP2), which appears to only happen when resuming from Standby. Performance lags so much that I have to quit ObjectDock Plus and immediately my system returns to its normal, speedy performance. Then I restart ObjectDock Plus and everything works fine until I next resume from Standby. I did not experience this issue with the free version of ObjectDock.

I do not experience this problem on my work computer (Dell Precision 380, 3Ghz, 2GB RAM, 128MB graphics, Windows XP SP2), which is also running the Plus version. I'm only running one, non-tabbed dock on both computers, and both are using the same shortcuts and docklets.

If a solution can't be found, does anyone know of a plug-in for ObjectDock that could be programmed to automatically restart ObjectDock after resuming from Standby? Thanks!

What, if any, docklets do you have running?  They are the usual cause of issues.
You can disable them all to test and then, if everything runs well, add them back until you find the one causing the issue.

I'm running a digital clock docklet and a system tray docklet. But disabling them will do me no good, because without them then I might as well go back to using the taskbar. I bought the Plus version specifically to have a system tray, only to find out that you have to have it on a separate dock, which I did for a while, but then it stopped working altogether, so I removed that dock. Do note that I'm using both of these docklets on my work computer as well and I experience no performance problems on that system when resuming from Standby.

Can disable just to test?

Also, what build of OD+?

And . . you can have the systray on tab of a dock if you want.

Removing both of my docklets has no affect on the performance problem. The system is still incredibly sluggish after resuming from Standby until ObjectDock Plus is restarted. There is something else that is causing ObjectDock Plus to be sluggish on this system, but not my work system. The only main difference is that the work computer has 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB, which seems like it would help in the short run. But over a longer period, it seems the 2GB would eventually be used up by an out-of-control ObjectDock. Also, the notebook is using an ATI GPU while the work GPU is NVIDIA.

So I guess I'm still looking for a work-around solution that will automatically quit and restart my ObjectDock when resuming from Standby.

I thought I'd go back to the regular version since the Plus version was buggy (aside from the performance issue), and the free version now elicits the same performance problem whereas before it worked fine. I'll have to try and figure out if anything else is conflicting with ObjectDock. Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to not use ObjectDock anymore. The work computer still works fine performance-wise, though (although the Plus version is buggy -- the system tray doesn't work on it).

Hmm.... did you install any software recently that could even possibly effect OD? OD was specifically designed to run efficiently even on those old 700MHz jobbies (trust me, last year, I knew all to well) OD+ should be the same, if not better. Try a virus scan or something. That, or your vista machine has only a gig of ram... which if it does will do the same thing. Vista is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too memory hungry but I think you need AT THE ABSOLUTE MINIMUM 2 G of ram for vista. especially if you have Premium up. if you have ultimate, I'd say at least 4G's of ram. ridiculously high amt. of ram, yes but that's microsoft programming shiz for you

If OD isn't running the system comes out of Standby just fine, though. When I reinstalled OD I copied my themes and settings over so I wouldn't have to set everything back up from scratch. Could the problem possibly be somewhere in those files and I've unwittingly recopied the problem back over? If I had been thinking I would have tested the performance on the default dock before copying those files over, but I really don't want to go through all the uninstall/reinstall effort again right now.

As I mentioned in my original post, I'm running XP SP2, not Vista. Virus and spyware scans found no problems.

Sounds like overhead to me. I have several 380s and if you check the number of handles in use vs. your notebook you'll probably see a significant difference. Check your video memory as well. See if it's shared or dedicated. Makes a big difference in how they run when 1 already has 1/2 the ram of the other.

Video memory is 128MB dedicated. OD used to work fine without any performance problems. I didn't notice any issues until after I installed OD+. Now, even after uninstalling Plus and reinstalling the free version, the performance problem persists.

I suggest following the initial advice given then. Docklets are "add on" and not all are equal. You may find that if one is the culprit a "better" docklet solution may be found. System tray does not require a docklet in the plus version.

I'd imagine plus requires much more write/reads in Standby mode than does the free version.

The system tray on the Plus version does not work.


Then I'd say you have something else causing the issue. A release or so back there was a version that had problems but it was limited to non-english installs of XP. There are also issues when plus is installed on a machine that still has the free version installed. The free version MUST be uninstalled first.

I have the system tray running on my home desktop, my office desktop and my laptop with no problems. See upper left corner of sshot.
