ObjectDock and Firefox

ObjectDock does not play well with Firefox

Hi,

I just installed ObjectDock (free edition) on my XP. It is a cool program and seemed very good. I did miss the fact that I could not shutdown gtalk completely from the running programs list or check the status of my active network (because its not visible, I hid the windows taskbar, and it is not visible in the running programs list).

However the biggest problem arose after a restart. Firefox insisted that there is no internet connection but the Internet is up and running. When I quit ObjectDock and start Firefox from the windows taskbar, it works fine. However when I start ObjectDock and then start Firefox from it, Firefox says no Internet is available.

It is interesting to note that if the previous instance of Firefox (started from windows taskbar) is still running, then any other instance of Firefox started from ObjectDock runs just fine.

Has anyone else seen this?

Put objectDock back on my XP PC today no problem with FireFox.

Have run ObjectDock on here before never had your problem with FireFox

Sounds like a docklet issue. I'd suggest disabling your docklets one at a time until you find the culprit.

Well, initially it was using the default internet docklet that comes with ObjectDock. Firefox is my default so it picked that up. When this problem came up, I removed docklet and added manually but that didn't help. I have also tried clearing the cache but no effect

I have removed all the other docklets but have the same issue (quitting and restarting ObjectDock each time). As long as objectDock is running, any new instance of Firefox refuses to see the internet connectivity.

I just installed the free version myself a couple of days ago on a Vista machine and my Internet Explorer 7 seems slow when started through the objectdock.

I was thinking it might be my connection but was not sure.

What docklet are you referring to? I'm not aware of any default internet docklet, or what it's for.....

Opera is my default browser, but I do use Firefox at times. Never had a problem with either.

Just an update, I uninstalled OD, removed the folder, restarted and then re-installed OD again. Firefox still wouldn't see the internet connection.

I see what you're talking about now. All but the Google item are shortcuts, not really docklets (even though they're listed in Docklets in the OD Properties dialog)................... confusing huh?


I'm sorry but I don't have a clue why this is happening to you. Never had this problem with OD Plus.

Anything running in the Windows systray, will not appear in OD's Running Tasks. You need OD Plus to get systray support.

Very strange. I use Firefox exclusively and have never had a problem.
Maybe you could try a shortcut to start Firefox.exe instead of the default internet docklet.

I tried that, making a direct shortcut to firefox.exe and also by dragging the shortcut of firefox from the windows start menu to OD. In all the cases, firefox starts up fine, it is when it tries to fetch a page, that it does not recognize that there is internet available.

It seems to me that there is something in OD which is interfering with how firefox interacts with windows.

Very odd . . .
IE works fine?
And FF works fine when OD is unloaded?

Have you tried teh troubleshooting option in ODs config panel?  Which ones?

Hmm...just checked mine - nothing special about the setup just have it linked to open Firefox.exe. Got me stumped too.

OK, I hadn't tried out IE before but it is having the same problem. Both FF and IE work fine if OD is not running. But if I launch them through OD, they can't access the internet. I tried all the options in the troubleshooting panel, i.e. enabled them and then restarted OD but they had no effect.

What security applications do you have running? Have you tried disabling them?

Hi Seabass, thanks for the hint. It was the firewall all along. It was setup to allow FF through but whenever OD launched it, the firewall figured that something was up and blocked it.

Well I didn't think of it because the firewall lets me know whenever an application is trying to access the internet. It does this whenever a new internet-capable application is installed. In this case one application (OD) was trying to use another application (FF) to access the internet and the firewall apparently blocked this as a default action without warning me. Just goes to show, never take anything for granted
