(continued)
I just got back from hearin' President Bush address the graduating class at the Air Force Academy. My band and I opened up the ceremony with the popular country/presidential tune "Don't Stop Thinkin' About Tommorrow", by Fleetwood Mac. The President, a half-descent sax player himself, got into the groove and was jammin' with us. At one point, his wailin' took off so that it silenced the whole gymnasium. It was the strangest thing. His solo went on for a good three minutes, all ad-lib I remind you, and when he finished the band, as well as everyone else, was stunned. Many of the grads were in tears, as were some of the band. Even the folks caterin' the affair were sobbin' in the background, and them bein' all democrats and indies just added to the strangeness of it all. It was like God had touched him. No, it was more like God had heard him... and gave him that Godly magic we all need from time to time to make things clear in our souls. There were, no doubt, men and women from every state gathered there, and they were all focused on their Commander and Chief, and him on them. This was life and death to them all. If the election would have been held then and there we'd a seen a genuine landslide (no offence to the 'Dixiechicks').
Now here's the part that i want you aspirin' young songwriters to pick up on, as well as anyone else that might read this chapter. I'd been asked by Dick Cheny three months prior to this advent to make an appearance. I had worked with Haliburton Enterprizes while Dick was there and we hit off pretty well, but never mind that. Here's the thing. The song I chose to end the gig with I chose with no knowledge of what was goin' to go down! It 's a song I wrote for President Bush's dad, George H.W. Bush when we kicked Saddam out of Kuwait. Check this out and tell me that God doesn't rule in the affairs of man:
"NICE GOIN', GEORGE"
