I have a widescreen monitor and started keeping my toolbar along the right border of the screen instead of along the bottom.
I prefer to keep it very slim.  Ihave the open apps and quicklaunch icons as parallell vertical strips, showing icons only.

I have noticed that I am sometimes able to use the mouse pointer to make the bar narrower. But sometimes it does not work., despite the taskbar being "not locked". What regulates this?
