Bug Report: Cursor FX crashes Windows Explorer...

...and Dr. Watson, too.

When I installed Cursor FX, I soon noticed that I was having frequent random crashes of Windows Explorer. It would first crash (for no apparent reason than I clicked on a task, button or other control), then Dr. Watson would open up, crash also, then Dr. Watson would again attempt to run. After that, I am unable to click on any button task or other control. I am forced to do a three fingured salute to shut down the two crashed Dr. Watson's, after which my system would resume functioning in an apprently normal fashion again... at least until the next explorer crash. I rolled my system back to CursorXP, and all problems with Explorer crashing have gone away.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your problem.... I'm having the same issue periodically. I hope someone addresses your question. Sorry I couldn't be of any help to you, but thought I'd let you know you're not the only one.

Just to update my problem, I rolled my system back to FX for awhile, then made another stab at XP. I reinstalled it and I have had no return to the former problem. I would suggest that you try uninstalling the appp and reinstalling it to see if that helps.

All of a sudden my Cursor FX doesn't work. I double click on the cursor fx control panel icon and the program takes a while to open. Then, unlike before, when I try to scroll down to pick a new cursor, the program says not responding and the window goes blank. I have to hit ctrl alt del to end the program. So, basically I can't use this program at all. Seems like these bugs should have been fixed before release.

Well, I have no idea why but I re-downloaded the program from the fx site and re-installed it. Before doing so I checked the version by right clicking on the .exe in the programs folder and it was 2.0.0.1. Yet, after re-installing it was still the same version. But now the control panel comes up much more quickly and I can also simply go into my computer and double click on any theme and open it that way. So, even though I have no idea what happened, it now works great.

Zubaz: XP is the OS and I guess the build is the same as the version above .1. It was the precision cursor but it now works fine.

OK. Now the crash problems are back again. I had uninstalled Cursor FX until a new Theme Manager could be relesed, but got impatient and decided that I would reinstall it again. Now I'm having frequent Explorer crashes again as I described at that top of this thread. Has the cause of this problem been isolated yet? Anything being done to correct it?

I am running the latest version downloaded from Stardock Central on WinXP. Currently I have the Argos cursor installed, but have had it happen under other cursors as well.

Give us back Cursor XP! I paid for that and it was a lifetime ownership so why is it gone? Does anyone even care? No

In case anyone is interested, I think I found the source of my Explorer crashes. For some years now, I have been running a small mouse utility called KatMouse. It evidently conflicts with CursorFX (and CursorXP, but less so). Once I un-installed the applet, the crashes ceased.

I spoke too soon. Alas, un-installing Katmouse merely reduced the frequency of crashes. Still looking for the answer to this sticky problem.

For those who are interested, it appears that installing CursorXP over the top of CursorFX was the problem that created most of the Windows Explorer crashes.... that and a small mouse utility called Kat mouse. After uninstalling all traces of both programs, I reinstalled CursorFX, and didn't suffer a single crash for nearly a week, and then the only reason I think I have had any crashes again is because I reinstalled Katmouse agaiin. But with the very infrequent crashes and the immense usefulness of the applet, I am willing to put up with that very occasional annoyance.
