Minimum wage is a joke in and of itself. What's federal min. wage now? $5.85/hour? How is someone supposed to live off of that? Especially if that someone has a family, medical expenses, etc...

Most min. wage jobs don't offer great benefits. And if they do, how the hell are you supposed to pay for insurance out of a paycheck that is only $234.00 BEFORE taxes ($5.85/hr x 40 hrs.)????

There really is no difference between these 2 any longer...Rep/Dem....stupid is as stupid does. They both have people so involved in discussing how ineffective and stupid they are that no ones doing anything about it. How about we all stop paying taxes and take away they're power and incentive to rob us all blind. And how about we make them all work for minimum wage! I mean...since they think it can be done...I think they should do it then...betcha that minimum wage would change tomorrow!

Those people rarely run for office.  They know they can do more working and doing instead of dealing with buearocracyI disagree with this though.  The problem with the healthcare system is cost.  And most of that cost is due to overpriced schooling (to a lower degree) and medical malpractice insurance costs (to a higher degree).  Legal reform would do more than anything else to improve the system.  I'm also seeing a number of doctors have stopped taking health insurance at all.  They have been able to reduce their staff dramatically (not having to process claims) and have been able to lower their costs and the costs to their cash-only patients.

Vote as much as you can, especially locally.  Send letters to your representative telling them what you want them to do.  Write letters to the newspapers.  Do what you can as often as you can.  That's how things change.

I work I.T. at a hospital. Here's another one that is ridiculous. A PC which runs a DOS based patient care application has to have all of the hardware government certified. There is nothing at all special about these PC's. They are quite generic.
If a hard drive goes out and you need to replace it you are FORCED to purchase a replacement from specific vendors which will charge unreasonable prices. A 40Gb hard drive would cost several hundred dollars if not a few thousand. You could get the identical part elsewhere for $50.

On the Education cost. Now why is it that you see so many foreign doctors that barely speak English. They get a lot of their education for free whereas our citizens have to struggle for years to pay it back.

It's ALL tied to the almighty $$ as Night Train points out. People a lot farther up the ladder MUST have their 3 vacation homes, yachts, and expensive cars at our expense. Anyone that thinks politicians are going to truly represent the people on the basis of morals will be sadly disappointed in the long run.

Why???? If not for the wealthy (don't need it anyhow), at least for the mid to low end of the socio-economic scale... then everyone would be able to afford to see a doctor/get medical attention.

We've had it in Oz for donkey's years now... meaning a vagrant who needed anti-biotics could rock up to a hospital and be seen/get treatment... none of that 'got insurance' first.... 'piss off' if you haven't.

Trouble was, because of the 'so-called' free trade agreement, there were arseholes in your country trying to get our arseholes to abolish it. Hopefully, the new government will tell 'em to piss off... Oz is a sovereign state and should not have to kow tow to foreign corporate greed/government interference in our domestic affairs.

Besides, being that things have taken a horrid turn for the worst, mrs starkers would be up shit creek in a barbed wire canoe and crowbar for a paddle... in dire straits if we didn't have public hospitals and universal health care.... all I can say is thank God we don't live in America.

And I thought our idiots in Canberra couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery... seems your idiots are just as bad, probably worse. If Oz can do it with a piss-farty population that pays considerably less tax than the aggregate of the US, which has vastly greater resources to us, then it should be possible for your gov't to provide universal health care, as does ours.

Get Bush and his cronies to cut the present and future invasion funds so your military isn't squeezing the guts out of Treasury, and you'd have the best possible... second to none health care on the planet. Justify the disappearance of all your hard earned taxes with the preservation of life, rather than the senseless killing of a war machine with an over-inflated budget.

Sad, isn't it, that elected officials never grasp what it is the voters actually want...

... they promise to listen, to do this and that, but at the end of the day there is only one agenda self-serving politicians are interested in... their own.

To give an idea of just how low I view them, regardless of which side of the political spectrum, if I saw a politician 'barely' treading water, I'd throw the bastard an anchor.

I'm guessing that'd be the Irish blood in me from way back... being I detest corporate, political and legal establishments with a passion. They've been screwing the little bloke for centuries because the majority of the upper echelon lacks humanity, compassion and have very few... if any redeeming qualities.

Funny thing this comes up...think it was Nostrodamus who predicted revolution in the Land of the Eagle. Trouble is, it won't be peaceful... too many guns on both sides of the fence for there not to be wholesale bloodshed.

Nobody will ever convince me that the right to bear arms concept has one iota of sense, not when 'those who have a bad hair day/can just crack' will go on a shooting rampage and kill/maim dozens of innocent people. It might be for different reasons, but the gun play on US and Iraqi streets is not a whole lot different... both situations are insane because people are needlessly dying... and that sickens me to my stomach.

The best thing the American people can do for themselves (and the world) is get rid of satan's butt-plugs at the next election... refuse to vote for any of them and watch the idiots self-implode in a state of panic and confusion.

Without executive orders, the military cannot legally declare war/invade anyone... meaning the pigeons wouldn't then feel the need to come home to roost, as someone once put it, and everyone could stay home and mind their own business... true peace at long last.
