(non internet) Seacrh entry

Apologies first of all as I'm sure this is a naive question, but :

I've just got objectdock plus. I want to add an entry for "search" replicating the search command I get when right-clicking start in windows xp. I see there's a search docklet bundled but that is for msn internet search. I've tried finding where on my pc the search command or exe is to direct a new entry in objectdock to that command but I cant seem to find it despite (ironically) searching everywhere.

Can anyone tell me how to add an entry to search my computer drives and files ?

dc give this a try:

Right-click the desktop, and select New | Shortcut.
When the Create Shortcut Wizard appears, enter rundll32 dsquery,OpenQueryWindow in the Type The Location Of The Item text box.
Click Next, give the shortcut a name, and click the Finish button.

or

click Start, from the menu click and hold the search option and drag it onto the desktop.

I had tried dragging "search" from the start menu and then dragging the desktop shortcut that creates, to the dock bar. That then works from the dock but not once I delete the desktop shortcut - for some reason the dock entry points to the shortcut not the shortcut's target, even though I've set the general option to point to target rather than shortcut and has worked fine on other entries where I've dragged desktop shortcuts from the desktop to the dock and then deleted from desktop.

I could leave the shortcut on the desktop but my whole aim is to have desktop totally clear. (BTW another issue - I cant delete recycle bin from desktop,is that not possible?)

It's for that reason I've tried to see where the search command points to so I can point my dock entry to same point, but no joy. I'm confused as would have thought the start menu search command points to an .exe somewhere

I tried the rundll32 option you suggested but when I try to use that shortcut a window opens up headed "Find Users, Contacts and Groups" - not the usual search window I'd get, and it hangs with an error message "the directory service is currently unavailable."

Waht OS?
In XP you can go to C:\Users\{UserName\Searches and drag one of those to your dock. Insta search!

You can also look into writing a wsh script that calls [WinKey]-[F] for XP or Vista

I had the same problem with getting rid of the recycle bin from my desktop and icons not working when I delete the shortcut off the desktop. I found a really simple solution. Just hide the desktop icons by right clicking the desktop, choosing "arrange icons by" and uncheck it. The icons are still there but you cant see them.

Zubaz - I am using xp. I don't seem to have the folders/files you've mentioned. No idea why, but seeing as I've been running xp on this pc for years I suppose I could have lost them somehow at any point. But thanks anyway

Xiandi - that's great, nice and simple and works. never realised you could do that !

Only prob now is I've organised my desktop and all my files and cant think of any more excuses to put off doing some actual work.
