I don't want WB moving my skins!!!

My Office/work/doc files have always been located OFF the 'C' drive...away from a 'wobbly' OS....so what goes into 'my documents' matters diddly.

As for protecting 'keepables' such as WB skins, WA skins, Docs, etc....all are separately backed by schedule to a third drive.

Nothing is left to chance.

And Keepsafe handles the Doc's as they alter when open.

Putting skins into 'my docs'....if it's the place MS 'wants' such to go...then that's that.  I'll simply work around/along with it....backing them from potential dramas as always...

...Microsoft believe than an app consists of executable files and data files and that user data files should not be stored off \program files.

These two requirements mean there are only 2 suitable locations for the WB skins...


Well, again, what about an option for us XP users to choose the place of our skins? Won't you please? Is there a risk of The Big Brother (MS) not giving the "Windows Vista Ready Seal" to Stardock?

Ah Change...Loved and hated at the same time. At the moment I am not too thrilled about it, but I understand the reasoning behind the file movement. I will just have to adapt.

I really do not like it when programs puts its files in My Documents. They way I see it it's meant to be, for just that; documents. I don't want a bunch of application settings and other stuff there.

Unfortunately many applications do this, so I'm forced to use a completely separate folder to store my documents so I can organize the folder to my liking.


I wholeheartedly (is that even a word?) agree with that.

I can't find my documents anymore in the "My Documents"-folder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I soooooo hate/loathe/detest it when programs put their backload in there.

Especially if their uninstaller "forgets" to remove those folders, either by design or by error. This means we now have at least three places which we have to clean out manually if we want to uninstall a program for good.

At least y'all are getting your WB updated, SD Central has been telling me for an hour now it's updating but nada yet.

Poddytat, if you have auto archive turned on in SDC, turn it off & try again, see if that works. Stardock staff have reported that as a possible fix and has worked for others.

I've updated right now to v5.92b.093 but I've seen no sign of a fix for what I'm asking for. Sad, just sad!

Asking the user would require a change to how SDC works.

Once your skins have been migrated you are free to change those registy keys to point to any folder.  Though it is very important that all users have read & write permissions on that folder.

Yeah but what about people who are wary (and rightfully so) about messing with the registry? I know I'm not comfortable with it.

How about a extra download from SDC (like the extra skins you can download) that is a form where you can browse to where you want the skins and on submit it edits the right keys in the registry to the desired path?

And it's a pleasure I'm quoting you, because I know who you are, but that's my point:
I'm all sat here. I've done all the registry changes and it's working pretty good for me right now. I could give up here but the problem is I'm an old programmer, since 1977 I'm dealing with comps, I've got my first PC (it wasn't called a PC yet) in 1979. In 1982... well, I've could told you a longer and boring history, but not!

I'm gonna repeat myself: please, just create an option, for us XP users, to choose where our skins will be, or to let us not to move them. Whatever, it was a great pleasure to talk to you, or to quote you anyway...

My main gripe is that I've now got Stardock stuff spread all over my pc. WB skins are in one place, dreams in another, and OD icons, I've at least three different locations for those.

Some consistency throughout all these programs would be welcome. One single location for all skins etc.

My thoughts exactly.

Since it looks like WB skins are in their present location to stay, we just need to get the developers of Objectdock, Soundpackager, and apparently Dreams (still on XP here, so I'll defer to Fuzzy on this one) to move their stuff to the same place as WB skins.

I'm not either and I've been on Pc's as long as I can remember. Regfixes I feel are a bad idea for any app.

Why not an option to install per user preference? It seems to be the consensus in this thread.

Call me insane but my wild imagination sees the real likelihood that IF Vista MUST have all these thingies in the Doc folder then you all may just get your wish [them all in one place]....as all other proggies [including other SD ones] also default to the Doc folder.

I find it a bit like the various permutations of Litestep themeing....all sorts of 'default' locations for for various vintages.....it never occurred to me that some may have been externally ordained....I always thought it was someone trying to stamp individuality through confusion.  [so much hard-coding of folder heirarchy].

Skins eg. Windowblinds always seemed to me to be more than 'just' 3rd party proggy data...and more like OS files themselves.  I would have been happy to see them in a subfolder of the actual Windows directory...to differentiate them from mere apps like Photoshop, etc.

For those annoyed about the apparent SD scatter [of locations]....I have one word.....

bout 16 hours a day, in rather a scattered fashion, sporadically and with lots of forced concentration, coffee\Red Bull, smokes, occasionally..a lil drinky drink.
