Windows Internet Explorer Error

From inside a WAN at work (DSL) I have considerable trouble staying connected to Wincustomize.com. I keep getting:
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site https://www.wincustomize.com/skins... Operation Aborted" and when I click on OK it closes showing Page Cannot be Opened.
Windows XP Pro SP2 and IE 7.0.
Is this due to our company WAN not allowing connection? They block all kinds of media downloads, but I usually don't have a problem with zip files.
I like to download wallpaper etc at work because I only have dialup at home.

I take it the way you have worded this post that you are not the Boss.

If the company you work for has not allowed or blocked all kinds of media downloads it's for a reason.

If I were you I would start looking over my sholder to see who's watching! If they can put blocks on the WAN to prohibit downloads they have the capability to track you and what sites you are visiting. Like your job alot?

No I am not the boss. However they have said they were blocking mp3, porn, web mail. I wouldn't think wincustomize qualifies. I have no trouble downloading wallpaper from National Geographic either.

Besides they actually block the site and tell you so. With wincustomize it does that after I have downloaded one or two or sometimes on the first. but it doesnt say "Forbidden", just page not found.

I get the 'you are forbidden' trying to acces WC from work due to (I'm guessing) the "unauthorized apps" in the list or reasons shown - which puzzles me no end - won't even let me into the forums there, but I can access the Stardock (creators of those unauthorized apps) forum.

Maybe size limitations? can only download this size or smaller?

got no idea on the Wan

page not found could be proxy issue - possibly set up if downloads start coming in, put a block until someone can take a look, see what's being downloaded?

maybe they figure if you get tired of the 'page not found' you'll just give it up and go to work?

This morning I got the Stardock News letter and i clicked on the article in the e-mail:
this week in Skinning Week 1. by the time the web page loaded I got that error. I wasn't even downloading anything just trying to read the article.

At this point it might be good for you to talk to whom ever is control of your IT section. Any suggestion that you might receive may cause you to change things in your computer. Your IT person just might get a little upset.

I am the IT person. As I said we are on a WAN of which we have no control.
What is happening doesn't seem to me like a blockage from them that is why I am here to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

One of the first things you usually do if you're seeking help is to present all the know facts and information. Knowing up front that you are the IT person for your compnay would have been helpful. Your're not just an employee looking to circumvent the system.

Simple question, even though you have dial up at home, do you run into the same problem? Is your set up at home similar (same browser etc.)? If so and you have no problems contact the people who own/control the Wide Area Newtork you are on at work.

Definitely not a work isse. Probably should have never suggested it because it was such a long shot anyway.

I found the problem this weekend.
I forwarded the WinCustomize news letter home (Dial-up connection through www.bwave.com ISP)over the weekend I went to that article. It immediately choked with the same error. I tried to go to this forum and the page didn't even load before it choked.
This tells me it is an IE7 issue. So this morning at work I opened that article with FireFox 2.0.0.7 browsed all around no problems until I clicked on a link for a download it opened IE7 (default) and IE7 immediately crashed.
doing this post in FireFox.
Both computers XP Pro SP2 fully patched. Work has 2GB RAM and home is 1GB RAM.
To avoid future problems until Stardock fixes it web sites I'll have to make FireFox the default browser.

Glad to see you were able to find what maybe the cause, and that you came back to let us know. Not alot of people do that. Not sure why.

I use IE7 with no problems. When I used IE6 I had problems related to browser addons or extensions. Things went crashing all over the place. Are you running any extensions or addons in IE7. Sometimes, which I'm sure you are aware of, when downloading from different sites you get some things that tag along.

Since you have FF and can get around with that why not consider uninstalling IE7 and going with a new install of it. It would help to pin point whether it's a browser issue or not.

Well I do have similar Addons at both locations. Mainly IESpell, GetRight, Adobe PDF (5.0 at home 8.1 at work), Google Toolbar, and Mcafee Site Advisor. I have a lot of other stuff at work Webex etc, but the worst connection was at home so I might install Firefox there and uninstall IE7. I have already done that at work once when the phising filter came out it drove me crazy until I turned it off.
I have different Virus scanners and firewalls. Trend Micro Enterprise at work and Nod32 and Black Ice at home.
Spent over an hour at work on FireFox after I made it default browser.

May take me a while, but I will report back.

I can't speak for other people when it comes to browser extensions but Google Toolbar was what caused me my problems.

Again, consider trying at home uninstalling IE7 and doing a clean reinstall. Then add one extension at a time to try and see which one might be causeing the problem.

It's worth a try.

sorry I didn't get back sooner. Ive been using FF. I just did uninstall Google toolbar at work and was able to download, read articles and go this forum without a problem. So when you surmised that GTB was the problem, i believe you were right on. thanks,

pierrejamme I forgot about this. Glad the suggestion worked. I do use Google, just not as a browser addon. It may work in FF and others, but have found the IE just doesn't like it.
