About a month ago I submitted a tiled background for ObjectDock. Let me first say that I was quite proud of myself because I am not a graphic artist nor a computer programmer. I am an "outfitter" by trade. That is, I bring supplies into the forest on the backs of donkeys. So for me to download a copy of The Gimp, learn how to use it and modify whatever an .ini file is to work with said taskbar replacement was a huge leap for me. What I did was to modify the "HyperGrass" background that comes bundled with ObjectDock to make Red Shag Carpeting. The next day I was chastised by a fellow subscriber that seems to be quite proud of the fact that he is a more senior inhabitant of Geekland than I. Way to make a guy feel welcomed! The point he tried to make is that for me to modify the "HyperGrass" artwork was copyright infringement. I gave credit to the original artist in the public description of the background and in the .ini file. The image was accepted and subsequently uploaded to the WinCustomize site; and can still be found here: (https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=13003&libid=29). Had I not given credit to Mr. Dario Arnaez, my touch of "background erase" and "hue change" would probably have gone unnoticed, but I'm glad it didn't. Now I have the opportunity to address the copyright question in general, not simply as it might apply to my small-time graphic. As I said, the original artwork came bundled with a program that I legitimately downloaded. I have seen that the majority of the artwork on WinCustomize.com is offered as a replacement for original software artwork. In fact, I am using Dario's Vista Start Button icon in ObjectDock and it clearly displays the Windows 4-pane logo. I have dowloaded replacement icons for he Gimp, IrfanView, Firefox... Did these uploaders get permission from the respective software companies or the artists that created the original images? Why would my modification of a Stardock icon be any different than Dario's modification of a Windows icon? I didn't see reference to the original 4-pane artist anywhere in his button. Did anyone ask that Bosnian kid if they could modify his IrfanView icon, for example? When one submits artwork to the WinCustomize website he must agree to its free distribution and use by the site and Stardock. I am not asking for clarification here; I maintain that what I did was not only legal but within the boundries of this website. -Greg
