Stardock is pleased to announce that the beta of SkinStudio 6 is now available for users of Object Desktop to try out and give feedback on.  SkinStudio 6 is a complete re-design from scratch of SkinStudio. 

With a totally new user interface and completely different design philosophy, SkinStudio is designed to make skinning much less labor intensive and welcoming to new skinners.  Check out the linked to preview guide for a taste of what's in it.

With SkinStudio 6, combined with the upcoming WindowBlinds 6, users can expect a whole new era in skinning thanks to the drastically reduced amount of effort involved in getting into skinning as well as the amount of work necessary to create outstanding looking skins.

2of3 : don't fear the new
I've being using SkinStudio 5 for years and I use it everyday, I'm using SkinStudio 6 for some weeks and it's impressive how easy to use the new UI is. It's a totally different program and some people (old SKS 5)users may miss the old UI at first but with some time they will get familiarized with the new interface and see that's easier to use. For new users the things couldn't be more intuitive since you're not exposed to many settings at the same time, you'll get the right settings for the sections you're working on.



Are both 5 and 6 independant installs? Can we use either or?

That's right...I'm still trying to get the hang of PSP 11, and you go and give me another proggie to learn.....I suppose a thank you is in order. Orright then, thank you Stardock.

Yep, I'm really looking forward to trying out SKS on this new beginners level I've been reading about....but be prepared for a request for a pre-schoolers level.

You have to have WB6 installed for this to work. For those who ask "Why doesn't this work?"

You can use both of them mate


I don't really understand how it's possible to use both of them ... Do you mean there will be V5 in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\SkinStudio and V6 (independant one ???) in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\SKS ??   


How will both manage with file types, shell integration and so on ??

neophil78: Right now SKS6 is not associated with UIS files.  Once it is then obviously only one will be the default editor, but you could still open the other.

im probably going to get bitch slapped for asking such a stupid question...but I kind of feel left in the dark here. I have purchased wb5 and skinstudio. will i have to buy new versions of both??

Kitty - if you just bought the apps, you will get all updates to them the following year, IIRC, someone can hopefully confirm this. So if you bought them 6 months ago, you'll get the updates for free. If you have an ODNT subscription you'll get the same plus access to beta versions.

Having messed with SKS6 for a little while now, I'm getting rather used to it. It's less cluttered than 5 and therefor less overwhelming and intimidating, especially for new skinners, certain aspects are explained better on the help tab which should make it easier to get into.

PixelPirate: Standalone apps do not work like that.

If you purchased WB after the 1st Feb 2007 then I believe you will get a free upgrade to WB6 when it is released.  If not then there will be an upgrade fee.

I like it so far.

Only one (1) issue so far.
In 5, when I want to edit an image, my paint program opens up "full screen".
In 6, it doesn't. It opens in a small window every time.
I hope there's a fix to this. It could get annoying after awhile.

There used to be a section for Miscellaneous->Fonts for classic widgets in SKS5
Where does that get moved in SKS6 ?

The classic fonts are not in the current build.  They will be in the final build.

Neil, SKS6 is really nice and is more understandable which will definitely help new skinners.  I am having a problem with the Vista part (theme portion) though.  When first installed it opened the edit windows but then later it gave an error message.  Now they are not opening the edit windows.  Everything else is very smooth.

After working with V6 yesterday, I have a few observations of past and present.  A nice feature of 5 was being able to click on the various parts in the preview and then taken to that section.  Also, miss the coding tab in 5 and being able to see the coding in SKS.  Granted a novice probably wouldn't be interested, but it is helpful to be able to see the actual code.  Also, there are various items in Vista, though re-skinned, are not showing up for me when applied.  Don't know if that is a problem at my end or if anyone else has encountered the same. 

I assume there is going to be the usual buttons, i.e., save, save as, zip file, etc.?

Also, on "edit image", is there a way to be able to tell it which program, i.e., photoshop, etc., you want the image to go for editing?
