More ideas

Brainstorming some other features to include in TweakVista...

Thanks for all the hard work that you've put into TweakVista!

I particularly like its design and layout; and I appreciate how you include references to the innate Vista control panel applets and configuration dialogs when appropriate.

Here are a few other ideas:

- Enable x-mouse features (focus follows mouse cursor).
- Change shortcut arrow to unobtrusive (small, light) arrow.
- Disable 'shortcut' text from being added when shortcuts are created.
- Get rid of the bluish soft keyboard that is present on the logon screen for 'tablet' PCs... Once tablet (Wacom) drivers are added, Vista automatically assumes that you may not have a keyboard attached to the computer, so it enables this graphical onscreen keyboard to appear on the logon screen. It's not in a floating window; it's part of the logon screen itself. Really annoying...

Well, I'm having a hard time thinking of other ideas right now -- You guys have covered most everything already. Maybe some other users can add their thoughts in this forum thread.

Here's another two related ideas:

- Easy way to modify file associations. We should be able to view a listing of file associations and then edit the command-line parameters that are executed with each option (open, edit with, etc.).

- Convenient way to restore some common associations that seem to get screwed-up sometimes: For example, jpegs and gifs should by default preview in the Vista Photo Gallery. Somehow gifs are now screwed-up on my machine, such that the Photo Gallery opens, but to a thumbnail view of my own gallery, not a preview of the file that I wanted to see. A restoration panel in TweakVista could allow you to restore common associations for jpeg, gif, png, bmp, wav, mp3, wmv, htm/html, txt, url, etc., so that they once again run with the standard Vista applications.

After trying the beta, I'd like to see an apply button on the bottom of each settings. I'm not sure if the program is changing my settings or not. An apply button will make me aware of the program doing it's job. Just an Idea.

And to throw one into the suggestion box, I would like to have all access to my computer. Since having vista, I'm told that I'm unable to do certain tweaks to my computer because I am not the admin. * User Accounts says that I am...so What gives?

...so a tweak to make me the Full Admin would be great.

I don't think you can do that. Just right click a program and click "Run as Administrator"

Yea, but some programs don't have that option under right click.

Ex: I downloaded PC TOOLS Vista Firewall to give it a try, didn't care for it. When trying to uninstall, I was told that I was not the admin. and was not allowed to such. First though: Well, who the hell is? Needless to say (System Restore). Then all of a sudden, No connection to the Internet. Needless to say (Format)....all that, and all I needed was to be the freaking Admin. LOL

Unless there's a specific apply button there, or some other instructions, it's changing your settings "with immediate effect".

The setting you are looking for is possibly Security: Low security (which requires a reboot), if you are trying to run programs that are not aware of UAC and do not request it, but which do require administrative permissions. However, in general you should be aware that network software like firewalls need fundamental changes to work with Windows Vista. You should not install such software unless it states that it is compatible with the OS. And if it says it is but it still has problems . . . well, the only answer I have to that is to use a better firewall. The one which comes with Vista is quite capable.

I am surprised that the uninstall didn't let you elevate to the Administrator level. I guess they might not have tested it properly.
