Uninstalled but Recycle Bin icon not reset to XP

I've recently uninstalled IconPackager's trial from my Windows XP SP2 PC. All the icons got reset to XP icons except the Recycle Bin, which still uses the icon that I set in IP.

How do I restore its default icon?

Before uninstalling IP did you reset to windows default icon package using the same IP menu?
If not I believe that you would need to reinstall IP, choose windows default icons, load & apply, make sure to check first to see if all the default icons took. Then uninstall IP. With any program that changes the default windows settings you must reset back to default before uninstalling.

Just curious as to why you uninstalled it, did you buy the full version?

Right before uninstalling it I did just that but Recycle Bin didn't seem to reset. I'll reinstall IP and try it again.

Just curious as to why you uninstalled it, did you buy the full version?


My PC is old so I wanted to free up some space.

Oh, and IP's trial on my PC ended; if I reinstall it will I still be able to access it?

right click desktop
properties
desktop top tab
customize desktop

click on recycle full once, then click restore default
click on recycle empty once, then click restore default

try again, this time click recycle full once > change icon > browse

browse to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll

When I apply a different icon (like a folder) it takes effect, but when I use the Recycle Bin icon it doesn't use the default.

Funny is that I can only see the default bin icon in Customize Desktop and Display Properties. Everywhere else, I see the custom icon.

If none of the above works, you might try the following:

Procedure #1:

Right-click desktop > Properties > 'Themes' tab > select 'Windows XP' in the Theme drop-down list > click 'Apply' > reboot as necessary.

Procedure #2:

You can look (and only look for now) in the registry editor and highlight the following key (folder) in the left-hand pane:

'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}'

Now press the '+' sign next to the key (folder) that you highlighted and then highlight the 'DefaultIcon' key (folder) that is now displayed below it.

Write down (or type into notepad) the values you see in the right-hand pane under the 'Data' column for the following:

- '(Default)' string

- 'Empty' string

- 'Full' string

If the IconPackager theme icons are still being displayed, these will probably show addresses for the theme recycle bin icons.

Note - do not press any keys while in the registry editor when just looking.

Note #2 - to access the registry editor:

Start > Run > type: regedit > press 'Enter'.

my browser (FF) text size is set at normal = the key is cut off at: "-00AA002F" but the F is cut midway so can't tell if it's F or P - can drag over and copy or reduce text size

It doesn't cut off for me (Firefox 2.0.0.3).

Anyway, I'll try reinstalling IP first, then try messing with the registry as Corky instructed. Thanks.

For some reason, reinstalling IP gave me a grace period of another 30 days, so I reloaded the problematic icon pack and applied. Then I loaded Windows XP and applied. The icon's restored.

Lol, and you had to go through the trouble of telling me about editing the registry - scary.

Anyway, thanks! I would buy Object Desktop but my PC hasn't got much disk space left, and I can't buy online.
