If a cricket chirps in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Philosophically speaking, I would say yes. If its hearing receptors receive a signal of sufficient amplitude to trigger self-awareness of its own chirp, eh?

Actually, it is deaf......



Which is why it didn't hear the bird swooping down to eat it.
