WindowBlinds needs a reboot

I have uninstalled/reinstalled WindowBlinds (v. 5.10), disabled "tamper protection" in Norton AntiVirus and still will not run. Skin "AlienwareXenoMorph" will not load completely and has permanently replaced the Recylce Bin icon!

I am running the demo versions and they will not update (ThemeManager actually updated).

Is there a problem with the install or is the demo not functioning? Do I need a reg hack to make it work right?

Any help is appreciated.

did you turn Norton completely off prior to installing?

did you uninstall any other previous version of WB first?


far as i know, demo versions don't update - they expire and don't work anymore

Yes, I turned Norton off completely.

WB (Object Desktop) was purged completely (I pulled all folders and reg keys that the installer didn't remove after uninstall and reboot)

I had the trial a few months ago and had removed it (before trial ended) due to insufficient memory. This time around its been installed for a whole day.

according to your other post it appears you uninstalled yesterday.

a couple of months is all the trial lasts

No, I actually had the demo a couple months ago and removed it only after a few days. I do believe you misunderstood me. Everything else seemed to work fine (theme manager, desktop x, etc.)

The clock doesn't stop counting after the removal and start fresh after a re-installing.  If you are still trying to use the "trial" version, this may be your problem.

I've looked everywhere on Stardocks site and I see nothing that states the demo's stop working after say 30 days. I had installed the programs as individuals, there was no demo for Object Desktop.

ObjectDesktop is a purchased product that includes the full versions of these programs - https://www.stardock.com/products/odnt/features.asp . There is no need to use "demos" after purchasing ObjectDesktop. As for the 60 days time period for the "trial" version of WindowBlinds please read the following - https://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/wb5/

WB5 also shows the number of days you have left on the nag screen.

Well like I had said before, I don't get that far. I install it and it constantly says I have to reboot. That is as close as I get to either a "nag" screen or "countdown splash screen". Everything works except for WindowBlinds. I never even reached a total of 60days on the trial. It just doesn't work.

It's 60 days from first install...not any 60 days of your choosing...

I'm guessing based on:

and removed it only after a few days.


it assumed you would mark your calendar when the other splash screens came up on the other install

not all 'trial' versions expire

example Object Dock - click the 'Try' button take you to download.com where you can get the free version - same with CursorXP


but I do think SD could be a little clearer on some of the pages where you can find things as to whether it's just limited and/or has a time limit

on the other hand, i've downloaded free trials of other software and was only given 7-30 days

Sometimes once the trial expires the nag screen fails to show.  This is something we will be resolving with WB 5.5 trial.

The methodology pertaining to trials is the user installs...and trials the software...and while doing so has friendly reminders that it is a trial and to purchase the full version if inspired to do so.

After the expiration of the TIME limit [60 days] a trial program will generally cease to function.

If you uninstall/reinstall you simply miss some of those reminders.

Neil has suggested there will be a revision to ensure that once expiration is reach there remains a clear indicator of that expiration....for those who 'miss' the messages by doing such things as multi-installs....

With respect, I believe that the way in which Stardock measures the 60 day trial period does not take into account the situation where a potential customer uninstalls the trial software, for whatever reason, and then at some later stage decides to give it another go.

I too was having the same problem as SiStaB.
I originally downloaded and installed WB5 demo in Sep 2006. Had it installed for a couple of weeks and was having problems. Reluctantly uninstalled it. Then noticed that I was having problems with lots of other software - likely culprit? IE7 beta....

Having resolved all the problems I decided that WB5 had not had a fair go, so reinstalled it. Like SiStaB, after installation only got reboot message. No expiration screen or any other screen.

Have since downloaded and installed the latest version, only to discover that I cannot use it because of the 60 day limit. It would be better if the 'clock' was temporarily stopped when the software is uninstalled and resumed when reinstalled. At least then the customer can give the product a another go.
