A company based in New York will pay $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Washington's Attorney General. The company was accused of marketing software that claimed PC's were infected with spyware, then enticing consumers to pay for their program to "clean" it.
Microsoft also sued the company after their advertising implied their tools came from or were endorsed by Microsoft. The status of that case is unknown at that time.
Over 1,000 Washington residents who purchased the software will be eligible for a refund. The company is required to e-mail all customers in Washington who purchased the software to let them know of the refund.
