Well part of my statement is a bit true. XP is proven as an unstable OS. From BSOD to viri to spyware.


This is simply bazaar. The XP installation on this PC is over 2-years strong, and has NEVER seen even one bluescreen.

Not true. It would be unsafe with potential to be unstable. That is not the fault of the OS.

And depending on the environment, it might even be safe. Maybe it's not attached to the internet. Maybe the ISP is doing viral scanning on their end?

I won't be upgrading them all but I have beta 2 running and as soon as I get RC1 in I am going to load it. I am ready for the release of Vista and I am running it on an average PC. I think I am at 2.8 on the Vista experience.

It still drives my 51' High Def as well as XP ever did.

Anybody worked with decoders in Vista. I loaded Nvidia Platinum because the stock decoder in Beta 2 expired. It works fine for DVD's but will not work with TV through media center. I get a decoder error. I know this will probably be a non issue once I put RC1 on but if the stock doesn't have the Dolby and DTS decoders I won't be using it.

How about no.  What is your definition of an "unstable OS".  I have run XP many times without AV without no problems.  So just how does it become unstable?

Hmmm... seems the instability in question is directly proportionate to the amount of idiocy navigating the keyboard and mouse.

New Windows users are just as clueless. And Linux is easy to operate thank you. Anyhow I'm not going to argue about it.

A true noobie would be just as lost with Windows. I remember my users confusion when we went from Win 3.11 to Win95; instant confusion on an "intuitive" system. And don't get me started on MS Bob, another intuitive system.

The fact is though . .that there are very few noobies (at least in the US). Between Apple and Dell in the schools and PC's in some aspect at most jobs . . who isn't exposed to some level of computers in general and Windows specifically?

Ok, I'll give you that one.
They would also be just as confused trying to figure out which rectangular hole to plug the keyboard in to. (assuming USB that is)

How? You just let Kona at it for 5 minutes....bound to have disaterous results, given his penchant for Linux and intense dislike of MS. Anyone who's dabbled with linux that long will have forgotten how to use a decent/stable OS like XP, and with his ever present anti-MS sentiment, he's liable to sabotage it on purpose.

Disclaimer...I just couldn't help myself cos the missus forgot to pick up my meds from the pharmacy today....that's my story and I'm sticking to it

Let's see here. I'm using XP ATM. I use XP more than I use Linux. I don't hate MS - it takes to much energy to hate anything. I dislike MS's business practices and tactics. BTW my XP setup is very stable.

Core2 Duo system here with supporting hardware (except DirectX 10 / TV tuner video card). Vista experience at 5.2.

I will still wait to see what Adobe does to support CS2 on Vista.

I would prefer to have a fully functional Adobe CS2 on XP, than a partially compatible CS2 on Vista.

If Adobe does not provide an update to make CS2 fully compatible with Vista, I may opt to wait a year and run XP while saving for a new video card that is DirectX 10 compatible and purchase Adobe CS3 which one must assume will be compatible with Vista.

I find that getting out and living life away from the screen is fun, so the PC is less important to me as time goes on - although, it has always been a useful tool.

There are a number of different threads on this topic on WC. I've derailed enough threads not to care too much . . but they are out there and might be useful. (ubuntu )

I'm not getting it. I don't like how the layout and access of everything is changed. It makes me feel like I'm no longer a power user.
