BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!!!!!!!

Simply put, I installed bootskin and selected a boot screen, then I rebooted my computer. My PC booted up and the new screen showed up, next the new screen goes away and up comes the blue screen with error messages. Is there anyway I can uninstall the program from a command prompt or maybe do a system restore from the command prompt? Thanks is anybody can help and by the way, the PC is running Windows 2000. I will boot the PC up again so I can write down the error message. Thanks in advance.

Boot into Safe Mode, set bootskin to default, un-install.

Thanks for the help everyone. I tried to boot into safe mode before I posted this thread and that didn't work. Thankfully for me, I kept one of my old computer books from a few years and ago and I learned about the "Last Known Good Configuration" feature in the advanced startup section. I was so afraid that I was going to lose all of my data, thank God for the "Last Known Good Configuration" feature. I'm all set now and I won't be dealing with this bootskin stuff anymore. I'm reading that this thing is safe and it causes an error on my PC 1st time I reboot. The boot screen did work by the way, I just couldn't get passed it.

Bootskin is one of those programs that will work for some, and not for others.

I also fall into the latter category, but for the infrequent times I actually do reboot it's hardly a great loss.

There's plenty of other Stardock apps to keep this ol' bloke happy anyway...

I too had the BOD after installing Bootskin. When I re-booted to see the change, the new skin was displayed but then re-booted without loading windows. Let me know what I was doing wrong if anything.

THere are three versions of bootskin available. They are different enough that one might work where another fails. Their success or failure is dependant on your BIOS.

Install, reboot, test, uninstall, repeat with new version to see if you can get it to work.

I'd just stay away from bootskin...I've seen nothing but complaints about it and it obviously isn't all that stable. Would be nice if it worked all the time..but I just hate the color blue on my screen!

I have had one crash in all the time I've used it and switching to an older version worked fine after that.

YMMV, take a chance.

I've used BootSkin on 3 computers (2 XP, 1 2K) for at least a couple of years now without a hitch. It all depends on your rig. I agree, however, that it's pure whimsy to use it and would have abandoned it pronto had I run into similar problems.

for someone with the journeyman title (I'm referring to user webgizmos), you would think you would be more supportive of this site and it's products. Bootskin works just fine and is plenty stable. Older pc's with older video cards will have issues running bootskin but that isn't a fault with the bootskin software, it's a fault with the faulty video card drivers and older hardware in that specific pc. Newer pc's will not have the problem.

This user is running win2k, it's time for an upgrade, heck winxp itself is getting long in the tooth. Upgrade to newer hardware and winxp, bootskin should work fine after that.

- I'm just someone who happens to think bootskins are worth the time & effort, no one has ever complained about my bootskins and I have enough downloads to date to think that there's a whole lot of other people out there that think bootskin is very stable and a worthwhile product to check out.

BootSkin is a nifty little product... when it doesn't cause problems. And the BootSkins that authors like unclerob have created are terrific. I use BootSkin.

However, if it was incompatible with my rig, I would not for a moment consider purchasing a new machine or upgrading a perfectly good and functional OS just so I could run BootSkin. There is a reason it is free & officially unsupported.

No so. I have a 5 month old Asus A8-N SLi, 2x GeForce 7600GT's, AMD 4400+ 1Tb of S300 hard drives... No version of BootSkin will work.

Hi Fuzzy Logic,
- you're GeForce 7600 video card may work great with games like Quake, Unreal Tournament, Doom, etc which is what it's meant for so in the end you haven't really lost anything if bootskin will not work for you. I think however the company that made that video card didn't really care how well it performs in a 16 color environment, it could also be the fault of your motherboard which doesn't fully support your video cards ability in a pre-OS environment (during bootup). It could be alot of different things at fault. However I can't blame the bootskin app if it doesn't work, more often than not it's a hardware issue of some kind: new or old.

Daiwa, you're right, it wouldn't be worth it for most people to upgrade a pc just to make a free app like bootskin work but if you do have a pc that it works on, it's a great program to use. And thank you for the nice comments.

As stated by Zubaz in reply 5, it is the system BIOS that causes Bootskin not to work on some systems, it is not a hardware/software issue. Bootskin is unsupported by Stardock, even if it still was it would be a hell of a job to make it work with all manufacturer tweaks of the BIOS.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure BootSkin started life as unsupported freeware and has remained so ever since - I'm not aware of any time when Stardock provided anything more than informal forum support for it.

If none of the Bootskin vers will work on a specific computer that is not a fault of either the proggy OR the computer, simply a limitation of its scope of application/compatibility.

Nothing at all to do with old systems vs new, simply the variations in BIOS types, eg OEM branded ones.

If you get one to work it will be painless.

If you do not get one to work the amount of pain is moot...

UncleRob...Obviously since you started creating bootskins you would have a problem with what I said...but simply because I have a problem with a program doesn't mean I don't support this site or its many other programs...I do a lot to support this site and have been doing it for about 3 years now. I have a "newer system" and "it did" cause a problem...I've also seen the numerous reports where many people with "newer systems" had a problem with it. If it works for you great...by all means use it...but I used it once and was blessed with the BSOD...and I just don't use a program that causes this on my system and isn't supported. Its plenty stable if it works for "you"...but it isn't stable for everyone...newer system or not...you just got lucky.

Sorry WebGizmos, never meant to offend you in anyway but reading my post a 2nd time, it pretty much came out that way. I apologize for my comments, you obviously do a lot to support this site.

When I read your reply "I'd just stay away from bootskin...I've seen nothing but complaints about it and it obviously isn't all that stable.", I didn't understand why someone would be so opposed to it and I reacted accordingly. (I need to learn to listen more and talk less)

IMHO Bootskin is an excellent program, it's unfortunate that some pc's due to some specific bios fault can't run the software.

You're right, I have been lucky & fortunate that it works as well as it does on the systems I've used it one.

I've tried all 3 version before. Never had a Blue Screen of Death, but never saw any bootskin besides default either.

Even if BootSkin worked on my pc I still wouldn't be interested in the library here. It would take hours of searching to find a skin someone actually made...

I'm having the same BSOD issues and my PC is only about 6 months old. However, I'm in the same boat as Fuzzy Logic and I also have the Asus A8-N SLi mobo, but with the 6800GT card.

My guess then is it has to do with the nForce bios? Anyone else with this mobo able to run BootSkin? I've got the lates bios version (as of about a month ago).

I installed it on my mothers laptop and roomates, both of which worked fine.

Honestly, I reboot my PC about once a week, so it's not really a big deal, but it's one of those cool features that a lot of people don't know you can do, so for those dozen times you reboot with someone standing there and you get the "DANG," it makes it all worth while
