Video Codecs

Okay got a question for all of you out there, what kind of video codecs, or codec packs do you use to be able to watch all your videos...

At first, i had an insane setup to install all my codecs, i had a codec pack and an ogm pack and an mkv pack, well since i havnt had the need to watch and dual audio videos in a long time, i decided to update my codecs and make it simple....

I decided to download ff-dshow and use that, at first everything worked brilliantly and i was like great a nice easy codec that works for everything i need...

then i ran into a problem, ff-dshow didnt have a codec for a certain avi file, i later found out it was a divx encoded avi file, so i downloaded divx and installed it, which allowed me to convert the file (i could allready view it without divx)....

but ever since then ive run into a problem, when i open up a folder with video files i get errors that automatically shut the window of the folder and give me a error report option.... this is extremely annoying as i have to keep opening the window and scrolliing down quickly to try and find what im looking for...

So once again, what do you guys use, and any tips on what i should get, im going to be formatting both my computers soon and would like to have a new codec setup to implement...

i use a video player called VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ which is codec-free and plays absolutely everything..it's freeware, skinable and even ingores the region code on DVDs...i've been using it for a couple of years and have never needed anything else...

Hmmm ive used vlc before when back when i was majorly into anime, i had tons of different avi files, ogm's, mkv's, you name it i had anime in the format... VLC while everyone said plays everything, didnt even come close

I remember having to still download codecs, and didnt even use vlc anymore cause i figured if i gotta get codecs i might as well use the player i like (bsplayer)...

I guess i can give it another shot, my memory could be off and maybe i just stopped using it cause i prefered bsplayer, who knows i used to smoke tons of pot, memory just aint the same

Sides not like i got alot of other alternatives to try

The error of closing the window you are experiencing happens if you have the folder set to Thumbnail view? If so, this is a known problem with Divx. If you uninstall it the problem will go away.

There are other codec packs out there. Some of the best ones also have some "questionable" software in them I have been told. I am not too sure myself, as I haven't looked into them that much. Klitetools.com has numerous packs, you can peruse and find the one that suits you the best.
