Worst Star Trek Character

Ok, now you now. I love Star Trek! The original, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. I miss it too, as well as the 10 movies.

But watching TNG (I have a stupid chest cold so am taking vicks cough drops and staying away from my co workers), they are on the Second season of TNG. And I hate Diane Muldaur! Excuse me Dr. Kate Pulaski! She is the worst actor/actress on any of the series bar none! How could they have done such a boner to get her! I thought I was rid of her when she fell down the empty elevator shaft on LA Law! (Oops, that was a stunt double. DAMN!).

So who is your worst character in the Star Trek Genre? You can pick any of them and tell us why! Just dont tell me you love Diane Muldaur! Gaaaaggggg!

Probably one of the best Star Trek movies.

Yeah, "Undiscovered Country" was probably my favorite one, although I liked the one with the whales, too (Chekov talking about "nuclear wessels" cracks me up). Christopher Plummer was much more convincing as a Klingon menace than Christopher Lloyd. I really love "Wrath of Khan," too (of course, both were directed by the same guy), with all its "Moby Dick" craziness (and those ear worm things are mucho creepy).

I've been less happy with the Next Generation movies, although "First Contact" holds its own quite well...and I think I said something about Picard's clone in "Insurrection," but of course the clone was in "Nemesis," and it was Salieri himself, F. Murray Abraham who was the baddie in "Insurrection" (which I thought was decent).

I liked the last few seasons of Voyager, although I never quite "got" species 8472, and I haven't seen enough DS9 or "Enterprise" to make any sort of judgment calls about their characters.

On the whole, though, I hope that Star Trek will make a comeback in the future. I hope Paramount doesn't give up on the franchise because of a lack-luster show and a film that tanked.

I think the movies have been bad because Berman has a vision of the Star Trek universe that doesn't so much synch with Roddenberry's. Not that it is a worse one, but when you're asked to swallow both, they don't match. Roddenberry was always about a bright, optimistic future. If you look at the movies and series after Roddenberry, they're more dark and menacing.

I'm not a fan of the TNG movies, really either. I hated all the toying with the 'emotion chip', and I really, really, really hated the fact that they killed of Picard's nephew and brother. That was one of the hallmark TNG episodes. A crime, imho. They worked really hard to fill out the characters and make them more human, but we'd been with them for what, over ten years by the time the movies started? A little late to start re-inventing them.

I would agree that Diane Muldaur just didn't fit in Star Trek. She felt like she was the same character from LA Law just pretending to be a doctor. Wesley was a good character, just a bit too whiney.
Overall though I haven't had a problem with the characters, just the stories. They get rather repetitive and boring in some of the TNG episodes especially. And the last couple movies weren't much better than a TV movie of the week special. Since First Contact they haven't made a Star Trek movie that really had a good story and excitement. Of course I partly miss the TOS crew as overall their movies were excellent fun.

Exactly. While I love a good space opera as much as the next guy, the vision of Star Trek was cemented in the original series. And it is hard to break that mindset when watching the latter shows.

I haven't researched it, but it is my understanding that the switch between the doctors was because Rodenberry didn't like the doctor, and wanted someone more like McCoy. If you note, she acts almost exactly like Bones.

I have the Star Trek:The Next Generation Companion and it said that Gene Roddenberry didn't like Dr. Crusher, and so replaced her with Dr. Pulaski. The storyline was that Dr. Crusher was head of Star Fleet Medical for that year that she was gone. The outcry from fans was so great, though, that they brought Gates back. She was always my favorite character, but I have to admit that I had a crush on Wesley Crusher. Gates McFadden wasn't pregnant until the 4th season. During the later stages of her pregnancy they mostly filmed her above the waist and put those really big lab coats on her.

My favorite episode was the one where Dr. Crusher and Captain Picard were kidnapped and had those things put on the back of their necks that made them hear each other's thoughts and Dr. Crusher found out that Picard was in love with her for years.

I can't really think of someone I ever really hated, but I guess I'll pick Dr. Pulaski on the grounds that she was an unoriginal character and that she replaced my favorite character (albeit briefly). I never really cared for Robin Lefler either.

I really hated the episode where Wesley dropped out of Star Fleet academy and went off to be a Traveller. I thought that they could have handled that better.

As for your comment about Berman vs Roddenberry, if you watched DS9, you can tell when Roddenberry died.

For the most part, Rodenberry had almost NO internal conflict. All the conflict from the original and TNG were almost always due to an outside entity or the influence of an outside entity. This is an argument Bakerstreet and I have had almost monthly for years.. And basically we're pretty much in agreement. I couldn't stand Dr. Pulaski because she was merely a poor copy of Bone. Mulgrew was TERRIBLE as a captain.. and I don't care what anyone says about empowerment for females. I am a female and I thought her command was very lacking. And Ensign Ro Laren was a sign of the things to come with DS9.. internal conflict. The episodes she was in tended to be a lot more like soap opera drama, which is basically what DS9 fell into. I don't know if it's entirely due to Berman's influence or the fact the space station just didn't go anywhere. Well, that's the three I would consider my least favorite.. Now let's give it up for Q..

Thanks for the info on the Crusher/Pulaski thing. As for Welsey and the traveller, they telegraphed that back in the first season when the introduced the Traveler. So while it may not have been handled well, we did see it coming.

The beauty of DS9, at least in the early years, was the introduction of the different cultures. That would be hard to do on a moving ship, or even a planet, but an enclosed eco system like the SpaceStation made it plausible. But when they decided it was all about war, the story quit being about the different cultures, and more of a space opera.

I'm not a good trekkie because I can't remember her name but I hated that religous leader on DS9. She didn't even have to talk just seeing her made my blood boil. I guess it's just the type.

um, I think it was the kai - I knew it would come to me.

kai Winn was played by - get this - Ready - Louise Fletcher! No wonder she was so easy to hate! (I did not recognize her 30 years after One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest!)

Hmmmm, hard to say...half of the characters from Enterprise, Chakotay did the least (he would be on the ship when Janeway was doing something, and occasionally try to tell her she's wrong and get overruled, you'd think that the First Officer would get more attention), and the other half of the characters from Enterprise.

Best character? Has to be one of the originals, Scotty or Kirk

Kirk is the man. It all looks a little silly now, but at the time it was exciting as hell. The effects then were the best on tv. The drama and conflict between the characters was great. They always ended up as a team, the best team the Federation had. Solving mysteries and problems I could never anticipate. Roddenberry was ahead of his time. Could you imagine what he could do with the special effects of today? I could really tell that something had changed around the time he died. His gift was unique. Remember Harry Mudd?

I also think the worst character was Neelix. I read an interview with Jeri Ryan in which she said, "Neelix should stop wearing upholstery."

I thought the last couple of seasons of DS9 were the best. The war was the most exciting part of the show.

Anyone see Galaxy Quest? They got the whole trek phenomenon nailed there, I think. I rented it and then ended up buying it. Tony Shaloub and Alan Rickman are a riot in it.

I saw that, and I was prepared to completely hate it (not being a Tim Allen fan in the least), but I laughed my tail off all the way through. Alan Rickman is frickin' perfect as the guy who always has to wear the make-up at the conventions and Sigourney Weaver cracks me up as being the "person who repeats what the computer says." Even Allen as the Shatner-esque captain was good (but Rickman is my favorite in that movie).

As far as themes, I always hated in both the old and new series when they put the characters in an anachronism involving actual historical periods (eg, the old west, romans, nazi germany). Just eroded my willingness to suspend disbelief. I always assumed they did it on the original series because the costumes were left over from some other show, but then they continued to use the holodeck to accomplish for this premise in the new shows. By the way, I do not count City on the Edge of Forever or Return to Tomorrow in this opinion. They are a cut above.
