If you decompile or 'reverse engineer' the product you are violating the EULA and stated & inherent copyright.

Yean this game is coming off.  I just don't like activation.  I run XP embedded and do not use a single product that requires activation.  Got burned over that in the past.

Nobody likes activation. But it's something we have to deal with. And by deal with, I don't mean perform activities which violate license agreements.

I take it this is why my WB5 won't install. I wasn't aware that WB went to online activation? If so, guess I won't be renewing my license. It's just too much of a hassle having to email companies to get permission to install a program I paid for. I currently have to go through this hassle with Windows XP and AIRoboform and that's the limit to me. And I always feel like I'm doing something wrong when needing the extra assistance.

And why dump all over broncobusterppg over reinstalling Windows. It seems excessive to me... but I can't argue with him on the responsiveness of a fresh install over one that's been running for a year or more. I used to reinstall win9x virtually every month for the same reason. For XP, my system performs well enough even with the years of bloat added to it that I don't warrant frequent updates necesary... but I can see why someone else would want to. It's their computer, and having to ask permission to reinstall a product you paid for just sticks me in the gut.

What's confounding though is Stardock appears to take an opposite tack with GalCiv2 which doesn't even require you to enter a key to install. Dunno, I'll wait and see what I get in my email and install wb5 when I get the new key. But I'm installing wb4 now and doing a backup and won't be updating my subscription as long as there are activations required. Not like that's going to break the bank for Stardock or anything... but hopefully for them there aren't that many people out there like me.

All of this because someone does a monthly reformat... Sounds a bit obsessive-compulsive to me. I don't see what the problem is with connecting to the internet to activate. Go to your local library and hook up wirelessly. If it's a desktop, then just get over it and find some way to connect.

but didn't they say something about in order to get some of the patches, you have to be online via SDC?

I too feel a bit uneasy with activation. It does not stop someone who wants to pirate the software, as cracks always were and will be available for any kind of protection. The problem it creates for me is more of a mental block than anything. I feel that the right to use something I purchased lies at the hands of the company (which is true), and I am at their mercy. Stardock, I implore you, rethink your activation policy! Users who like your software will pay for it. Users who pirate your software, will probably stop using it after a while or pay for it at the end. And just because X number of people pirate your software doesn't mean that that X number of people will buy it if they could not get it for free! Have faith in the user!

hmmm...volume license for windows xp on a home machine? how many machines are you running at your place...10? if you're running just the one machine then you paid way too much for windows xp...unless of course you "borrowed" the license key and software from work.

reformat once a month? seek help...run...don't walk

Would you all lay off the guy?? Theres nothing wrong with reinstalling your windows every month. I reinstall my windows once every 2.5 months, mainly because I'm a software junkie, and it gets unbearable to run it after 2 or 3 months. A clean install is the easiest fix, and he is right, nothing compares to a freshly installed copy of windows.

There shouldn't be a need to find some "alternate" way. The end goal of paying for software is to eliminate the hurdles, not create more.
